A local surgeon's office has asked our group to perform deep sedation in healthy patients for office based procedures. They seem to have enough volume to support sending one of us over there once or twice a month, but want us to bring our own meds. We are ok with doing this and really only foresee administering proprofol almost exclusively.

Does anyone know how we go about buying medications for our group for use in this setting? We asked our practice management company, but they have no idea.

From the internet, of course!

There are some online catalogs where you can order drugs. I ordered some things from these guys 8 or 9 years ago. They need a copy of a medical license, and a DEA number for schedule 3+ drugs. For schedule 2 drugs you also need to fill out a DEA Form 222..

Henry Schein

Prices for stuff we use seem to be reasonable. I just looked, out of curiosity.

Generic propofol is $2 per 20 mL vial.
Midazolam is under $1 per 2 mL vial.
Fentanyl is about $1.50 per 2 mL vial.
Roc is about $4 per 5 mL vial.
Sugammadex is $130 per 2 mL vial.
Neostigmine is $25 per 10 mL vial.
Glycopyrrolate is about $15 per 2 mL vial.
Ondansetron is about $0.25 per 2 mL vial.

What pgg said.
Only things I can add:
Call up both Henry Schein & McKesson and get the Reps to visit you in person to set up the accounts. You will need both to compare prices as you go & avoid backorders etc.
Tell the Reps what meds/suppies you will order the most to get discount prices locked in the system.
Ask the Reps to have their compliance dept start processing the controlled substance stuff from day one (if they forget then your 1st order will get delayed).
Order from the websites but stay in touch with the Reps. They can save you or hand deliver in case of last minute problem.
Good luck.

That's a lot cheaper than I though aside from Suga/Neo/Glyc

Wait, you guys can just buy up drugs in bulk and have them shipped yo your location with no questions asked? How does that make any sense, given that a physician can't even self-prescribe a tiny vial of norco for himself, yet we're talking about taking possession of bulk quantities of fentanyl which you can then apparently utilize with no oversight...

Well, it's not really a no-questions-asked situation. A physician with a license, DEA registration, and form 222 has answered a whole lot of questions. State and federal laws require record keeping. All DEA registrants are subject to audit at any time.

Thanks so much for the info PPG and Kamilo. I've contacted both companies and it seems much more straight forward than I had imagined now that I have an idea on how to proceed.

Neostigmine Was around $90 last time I checked for the surgery center. They jacked up the price cause coincidentally suggamadex was $100/vial.

All this drug price fixing is a joke. We all know it.

You might check and see if it can be done through your hospital pharmacy. They already have all the drugs. Compounding pharmacies can be a source as well.
