Hi all. As out-of-state students or those applying to Western/attending Western, how do you intend to pay for tuition (scholarships and rich parents aside). Do Stafford loans really cover the 35k tuition, especially when you're not working? How do you Tufts people afford it? And that's just the tuition. How then do you afford your rent, etc., when yearly total costs are about 50k?

I am at Western and the loans will cover all (you may need to get some alternate loans over stafford for living expenses.) I have paid for all four years through loans........😱

Yeah, it's all about the loans. Stafford is great until you max out...large number I can't remember but maybe not large enough if you had undergrad loans. Then there is the health professionals loan with higher caps. And as Chris mentioned there are private loans on top of that. A little - okay lot - of debt to make it through vet school is all worth while.

anyone know the max on staffords? pending acceptance, this will be my fourth degree...ugh. all with the help of good ole mr. stafford.

Stafford loans max out at $30,000 per year unsubsidized and $8,500 per year unsubsidized. There are also Federal Perkins loans and Health Professions loans that should be available. If they accepted you, I wouldn't worry too much they'll find a way to make you be able to pay for it 🙂

Are you, at least for the most part, able to defer repayment on undergrad loans until you complete Vet school? Makes me wonder why I chose such an expensive undergrad school when I had intentions all along of going to Vet school.

as far as I know, as long as you are in school, you should be able to defer student loans. it just sucks when they're unsubsidized (you're paying interest on interest).

From a slightly different perspective - if you go to an overseas school, your Stafford loans max out at $18,500/year (subsidized and unsubsidized combined, I can't recall their breakdown). I always used private loans (high interest rates and some will have an aggregate maximum...so you can't always use the same company). Now I am in debt of at least $200k. I am deferring (and forebearing w/one company) until I can make a higher salary (as an intern I am not making much).

The loan companies I have used: Sallie Mae, Citibank (Citi Assist loans), and IEFC (http://www.iefc.com).

Sallie Mae
That's who I used for undergrad.

Since I just received the notification email: Do you need to keep submitting the FAFSA, or is that just undergrad?

<--- Not good with all the paperwork

I was working on Tufts' financial aid stuff yesterday and they say to fill out a renewal FAFSA if you have filed one before. So I guess that's a yes.

Thanks, all. And Thanks, Cindy. Western's yearly is 34k, so only half of that can be covered by Stafford. Wow. Oy. Wow.

NO Western covers ALL tuition by stafford (we max out at 38000 not 18000 like you would if you went international like Cindy did.)

PHEW!! (of course, I'm completely counting my chickens before they're hatched). How is the dean of Western? Is she kind? I sent her an email over the weekend and she hasn't responded. Just curious.

She is really nice, but extremely busy. Do not take it personal if it takes a while to get a response from her. You will get much faster response by emailing Karen Lopez.
