Hey Guys,

I've been at a cc for a year and am reading to transfer to a university. I applied to Columbia and received a rejection letter today. I was so sure I was going to be accepted there because of the time I spent writing the application essays(1 month prior). Well this rejection has me stressed out now. Currently I am waiting for another school to reply with an answer.

My main question is how to deal with rejection? How do you guys deal with the stress, I mean I feel lousy right now. 🙁

I don't drink Jagger 😀

I'm very prone to being an idiot so take this for what it is worth... so far, due to being rejected in one capacity or another, I've joined the military, went off to war, came back, walked on to a nationally ranked Div 2 football team, got a full schol. for btw, went back into the military, became an Officer and Ranger Tab, and now I am going to go to medical school...

Point is, tough/bad **** happens everyday to 'good' people. This is exceptionally hard for many of us here to swallow, esp. seeing how the overwhelming pop. here are just that, filled with fantastic ideals. But this is just a test. Now is when as well as how you find out just how much character that you really have. Embrace this suck.

WOW well said! 👍
Thanks for the input

Be glad that you won't be having an extra $100k for two years at Columbia added on to your future $200k cost of medical school.

I try not to take any rejection or acceptance personally.

Schools get thousands of applications and the arbitrary elements are many, especially at a place like Columbia.

As for stress, I recommend making a list of your worries and scheduling time in the future to think about them. It sounds hokey, but it works for me.

Agreed. It's important to keep things in perspective, since being rejected from Columbia doesn't immediately disqualify you from your dream of becoming a doctor. Don't get too caught up in having something exactly your way, because even if you're "so sure" of something, the unpredictable can and will happen. C'est la vie.

I don't drink me either!! Hahah, just as an aside ... my name has nothing to do with JagerMeister.

If you think rejection sucks in undergrad, wait until you apply to medical school. I applied to FAR too many schools, and have gotten way more rejections that I thought I would (and way more interviews than I thought I would too!!). Like others have said, you can't take it personally. It could have been anything about your application, or it could very well be that there were just a TON of applicants and you were great, but someone else had just something a little bit better/they were looking for. Also, remember that sometimes, things seem to happen for a reason. If you didn't get into Columbia, maybe the committee saw that you wouldn't be a good fit there and that you'd be happier somewhere else, and you'll see this when you get into another kick ass undergrad soon and forget about Columbia!! Good luck.

the girl says no, i say next!

Thanks for all the input guys. I do feel better and it's off my chest now, I just wanted to go to a nice undergrad school. I know it doesn't matter where you attend buy for my last two years I wanted to make a impression to med schools that I do have what it takes and I'm willing to travel the extra mile to get in.

Guess I'm going to just work on my GPA and MCAT since I have volunteer hours done and e.c.

Once again guys thanks

MCAT + good GPA >>>> Name of your Undergrad (I know this firsthand).

Rejection is one of the constants of life. If you don't get rejected in some capacity you are not living life to the fullest.

You would have to be one exceptional individual to have never been rejected anywhere, by anyone. In fact, I'd like to meet that person.

The idea is to not take it personally. I think of it this way; I've already given my all, if they don't want me, I wasn't destined to be there anyway.

Three ways really

First, screw 'em they didn't see the strength in you then they can sit on it and spin.

Second, Accept that your plan does not involve their institution.

Third, shoot super mutants in the face with combat shotguns in Fallout 3. Then of course there is the 200 yard head shot through the sniper scope that I have become a fan off too.

I'm not psychotic; I promise

I just meditate or try some relaxation, some of my first responses from medical schools were a wait list and a rejection, and later on I got accepted, so I finally prevailed in the end.

two things:
1. there is a reason you didn't get in... there is somewhere else you are supposed to be. Where that is, I don't know, but life has a way of working out most of the time. Tell yourself Columbia is overrated anyway.

2. Time spent on an essay in no way equates to any chance of acceptance. You should get used to this early. Just wait until medical school rejections start piling up when you've spent hours writing personal statements, answering pages of innane questions, and spent thousands of dollars applying.

OP, wait until you do this a couple years in a row...not saying you will, but it could happen, it did to me.

Like every wise individual said on this thread, if it is meant to be it is meant to be. Adversity and rejection are life's constants, but they will only make you stronger and more appreciative of your future accomplishments.

Stress, well, some people just do not handle stress well. For me, before the fact, repetition and preparation…after the fact, I either work out or have a drink (somewhat counterproductive, but works for me). You dont drink though, so perhaps the former.

A lot of good students get rejected from top universities, students are who are clearly qualified, admissions to a prestigious university like medical school is largely a crapshoot. I wanted to go to Harvard, went to a state school for a year and then got into Stanford, even better.

I LOVE SDN!

Well the only reason I was upset that Columbia rejected me was because I had 1 year of volunteering with them in 2 areas of a affilated hospital. Had their physicians write me lors and still nothing. Now I'm over it, on to the next plan and if that fails well then rutgers here I come.

For med school, I don't really care which one I go to as long as I get into one on the first cycle I apply only U.S. of course.

I know you're feeling a lot better about the situation and I'm definitely glad to hear it!
I just thought I'd say that it definitely helps to take a moment to recognize all of the great things you have accomplished. I think when we get hit with rejection, we have a tendency to forget all the wonderful things we've achieved and experienced. In trying to get to your destination, don't forget about the journey! Pat yourself on the back for that A paper. Go out for drinks because you did well on that midterm. You deserve it! And I think it definitely helps build up that confidence so when rejection does happen, it doesn't completely tear you down. Just my two cents. 🙂

Life is not how about how hard you hit but how hard you get hit and get up to get hit again. I am a repplicant and have multiple acceptances. I got hit and I got up.

Congrats! 👍 That is awesome!

First of all. Make realistic goals. Having insane goals for yourself is never a good thing. I don't know you, you might be an outstanding student, but a transfer from a CC to Columbia seems like a big stretch. Its ivy league. Usually they grab the smarties straight from high school. Maybe if you transferred from Harvard to there, might be a different situation. Don't take this the wrong way.

And if you think rejection is bad for undergrad, its probably 20x worse when applying to med school. Plus it costs more to apply, your desperate for an acceptance, everyone is wondering if your getting in, etc. Pressure, pressure, pressure.

Advice: Toughen up and don't let the naysayers get you down. That's really all you can do. Good luck.

I thought I had a chance because my father has worked 20+ years for them, I have volunteer experience with a affilated hospital and had physcians from their hospitals contact them and write me lors. I know this is going to be useful down the road but I thought it would help me in my acceptance. They also know this coming summer I will have publications with them but I guess none of that mattered to them because they wanted to see that 4.0. Oh well

Didn't want to make a new thread so decided to bring this one back. Well Columbia is long gone and it's time to make my decision where should I transfer from my cc. I did get accepted to the other schools I wanted. Problem is choosing, I like the private school I got accepted to because it will allow me to recieve a degree in neuroscience with a minor in biology. The reason I like the state school is because of the name Rutgers. The name might help in the appliation process later on (maybe)

I would like to hear from you guys and see what you would do. Thanks in advance.

I'd go with the state school because of the $. If you want to eventually pursue medicine who cares about your undergrad major, you can always specialize in neuroscience later in life.
I went to a state school (SUNY Stony Brook) and I must say, its pretty awesome to graduate owing $0 in student loans.

So I just looked at the Rutgers website, can't you do a major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience?

dude! Rutgers! I love state schools... school is what you make of it afterall.

As for rejection...2 words.. "Johnnie Walker"

Colour is up to you😎

Theres more then one campus. I will be attending the newark one because it's just a train ride away from me. $1.75 one way 😀. I did want to attend the new brunswick campus but the commute would just kill me on a daily basis there.

I guess I have two years of undergrad left and wanted to enjoy it with a place I can learn stuff. The private college has a reputation that the professors are really helpful and go out of their way to help the student. Rutgers, lectures hit more then 300 lol.

Both college have their ups and downs, bottom line is Rutgers has the great name and the private college teaches better. I also still have to take organic chemistry.

Will the Rutgers name help at all?

Name of your undergrad institution means squat.... I am at a DO school and I have a few kids in my class from Rutgers and Columbia both, and also from other top schools like Princeton, Stanford, Wash U, and UChicago. Obviously, if name mattered they would have been at Ivy league med schools instead of a lowly DO school somewhere. I also know a few kids from state schools who are at high ranked MD schools, one in particular is my friend who went to SIU Edwardsville and is now at Wash U. I would save as much money as I could, and if that means attending a lowly state school for undergrad, so be it.

Thanks for the advice, you just cleared a lot up for me! Di was under the impression if you attend a school with a "good" name it looks better because the work load maybe more difficult. This is what I heard, I am only applying to DO schools so I guess now I know where to attend for my final 2 years of undergrad.

I found this post a little funny only because a couple years ago the Ivy's (Harvard, etc) were under scrutiny for grade inflation. Kids were graduating with A's only because they were "good enough to get into Harvard so they deserve the grade". I kid you not. They had failing test scores, but Harvard couldn't risk having their reputation ruined with kids failing, so they just gave out A's. And yet the reputation is perpetuated and the name still means something. Funny.

Wow that's pretty shallow of those ivy league schools then. Rather earn the grade not get a easy A in course I need to learn.
