I recently had a sit down converstion with an adcom and had someone with me. After the 15 minute dialogue, and after leaving the school grounds, the person I had with me gave the much wanted criticism😱 And by the way, he has an executive position at the company he works for, and "lives" in this world of executive -type talks/interviews... so from his prespective; had that been a job interview...😳I would have failed miserably! My posture was all wrong, I used a lot of "hums and delayed responses..." I seemed way too relaxed, and didn't seem confident enough.... well as you might well imagine, our car ride home was all about how to "read" top executive types and to the power of body stances, eye contact...blah blah blah. So I pretty much bombed the meeting😡.
How do you interview? Are you the nice and quiet type, or the free spirited relaxed type (like me), or the over the arrogant gunner? What are you?

I have dealt with lots of different people in life and am at a point in life where a-kissing just isn't the thing for me (not that it ever was), I like to be myself, and maybe being too relaxed just might be a mechanism for stress release (since I don't feel any) I see it as just a meeting with another person, most likelly a lot yonger and inexperienced than myself😀. Pretty funny he believes if I don't change my non-arrogant ways I'll never get accepted! What do you think?

Hahaha...well... I am more like you, I suppose. I'm not a gunner, but I am certainly not the nice and quiet type. 😀

Be yourself. Why not? In the long run, wouldn't you rather be at a school that appreciates you for yourself? Besides, I wouldn't want to act like a gunner only to get into a school that accepts a whole bunch of folks who probably ARE gunners! :meanie:

I am not saying that you shouldn't practice interviewing. But you should be comfortable in your own skin. If anything, adcoms will probably appreciate that the most. Moreover, they are used to young applicants who are very nervous and inexperienced with interviewing. If that's their baseline, you might find doing all that crap your "friend" suggested is WAY over the top. Be confident in who you are, be sociable, courteous, and professional. Don't be a jerk or arrogant.

Was I perfect during my interviews? Hardly. Could I have been better? I bet I could have.

Did my attitude work for me? I'll let you decide if my philosophy worked. Check out my MDapps if you want (on the left). Of the 6 interviews I actually attended, I was accepted to 5 schools (and withdrew from the very large waiting list at U Pitt). That is, I wasn't rejected from anywhere I interviewed.

I have no idea how I interview. I know I've been interviewed a lot and if I get that far, I usually get the job or position so I guess I'm not horrible. One of the things I want to be checked on the most is interview style.
