I'm in process of sending update letters to couple schools and they all said they want update letters via email. But what I'm confused on how to send them? Do I just make a pdf of a update letter and attach it to the email or do I actually just type it straight in the email? Also what's the correct format for sending out cover letters? I've heard they're like cover letter. Is that true?

Put it into pdf form. It's much more formal that way.

I'm sending out update letters now and I called a bunch of schools to ask what they prefer, and most of them said to attach it as a pdf. UCSF wanted it snail mail and NYU wanted it in the body of an email, but those were the only exceptions out of the 10 schools I called.

I sent it in the e-mail. I hope that isn't bad!

I just send them in MS Word attachment.

Honestly, it doesn't really matter. An update letter isn't likely to change one's chances at a given school, positive or negative, and even if it does, chances are the actual contents of the letter will matter far more than the medium through which it is sent.
