I have applied at CVS and Walgreens for over a year. I have not got a Job since. I am a certified pharmacy tech. I am very likable and have a great personality. I called every CVS in the Dallas Tx area and surrounding areas and asked if they were hiring.. I kept getting, 'we are fully staffed. I just hired on someone. Techs are fighting for hours. I was like really?? So I noticed new people were getting hired weeks later. Hispanics, Asians and whites. I have not seen a black pharmacy tech in every cvs and Walgreen pharmacy. I came in CVS with my button up and tie, slacks and square toes and personally handed my resume to the pharmacist with a good attitude,friendly and a smile and she told me "you guys dont work" I was like what does that mean. Who is you guys. Then she said she will call me in 6 months. I left and never looked back.. I don't know if they don't trust black guys 18-25 range group with medication or what. Do they think I will steal medication or get them robbed. I don't know. do you guys know???

It seems like the pharmacist are very judgmental and are uncomfortable. I mean look on TV. who do you see robbing, shooting. drug dealings. Unfortunately its the young black males. so what do you expect the pharmacist to react when they see a young black male like myself to come in and apply for a position dealing with medication. Reality Check!!!. Im sure you heard about that shooting spree that happened TODAY. in Connecticut. black male. So put that in perspective. I am a criminal before a pharmacy tech when I apply for a job and go to the interview... and its a everyday battle that us young black males that are trying to make something for ourselves. we have to deal with this issue on a daily basis. so we have to go the extra mile and watch what we do and make decisions step by step so we don't get looked over.

And did it ever occur to you that there could be other reasons you didn't get the job? Maybe you were competing with techs that already had experience. Maybe you were wanting full time and they were looking for part time (or vice-versa).

When I was applying for tech jobs, I applied for both retail and hospital. Have you tried looking at hospitals? There's like... a ton of them in the Dallas area.

What does your resume look like? Where else have you worked? Look for reasons other than your age and race before you go accusing someone of breaking the law.

people are open minded once they get to know you.. . ... as a tech people depend on each other and it is like a small family one person affect everyone in the group...

Well I always believe that to get what you want, you must first work hard for it.

I first called around some hospitals and asked if I could volunteer. After 2-3 months of waiting I finally got to go to the one of the orientation. I went to get some shots (tetanus I believe) twice, physician check up, and the site was about 30 mins from my house. Then after that, I waited about 1-2 months but never got a call. I decided to call and asked and they said they can NOT allow anyone to volunteer at the pharmacy so there you go, 5-6 months of waiting and effort into the trash bin.

(At this point I thought I have to be certified in order to work in any
pharmacy)

I then spoke to one of my classmates who happened to be in the pre-pharmacy track. I asked her if she has gained some experience and she said she is currently working as a tech. Then she told me that I don't need any experience to work at the pharmacy since they will train you to become one (CVS). Later on I applied to some local pharmacies and never got a call back after about 3 weeks. I decided to visit one of the closest pharmacies and asked if they were hiring. BOOM! they said they were hiring, I was really jovial when I heard it. The lead tech took down my name and number and said was gonna give me a call back. I got a call back about 2 weeks late0r. (this is after I had called about 3 times since he took down my number). Then I was told to wait again for a call for an interview. I did not get a call even after 1 week since I got my previous call so I decided to call. I actually HAD to ask and schedule for an interview. I was interviewed the next day and hired on the spot. If you think everything is going uphill from this point you are wrong LOL. I took a drug test the next day after i was interviewed. Then I told the manager i was gonna go away for 3 weeks and she said it is fine. She told me to start training after I came back and I said that's perfect.

I came back and i was told that my app had expired and that I had to reapply again and take a drug test AGAIN.

Then FINALLY, FINALLY, I got the training packets and my name BATCH.
AND TODAY WILL BE MY FIRST DAY OF TRAINING.


SORRY FOR THE NOVEL. I just want you to get a feel on how hard I worked to get this job. I also spent like 60 bucks on the pharmacy technician book that i never even use plus 100 dollars for the physician check up. BOTH FOR NOTHING.

Also, I don't believe you can be a tech just for the summer. my manager actually asked me what I wanted to become and stuff (i told her i wanna be a pharmacist) and she was estimating if the time would be enough for me to be a certified tech before i went to pharm school. I am intelligent to know that it could be those reasons but its not. When you hire someone who has no certification vs someone who has certfication. That's a problem. to pay them less or what?? when you constantly hire new people. and you tell me you are fully staffed or your cutting hours just Check the tsbp.com and you can find all of the new employees. I pulled up all the pharmacy companies in dallas from the tsbp.com and went down the list and applied for everyone of them.. Including hospitals. Schools,jails long term care. EVerything you guys are thinking about I already thought about it and done it. I even wrote letters to the directors of pharmacy to intern for little or no pay. YOU NEED EXP. I have 3 years customer service and sales experience prior to getting certified.. Until you see a black male pharmacy tech at CVS Or walgreens you let me know. FYI: In the place where I live there are only about 10% asian the rest are white and black. And I still got the job.

Someone might not have been certified, but maybe they had a masters in biochemistry and twelve years of customer service experience, so the place was willing to train them and pay for their PTCB exam.

Not necessarily. I'm working my first tech job at a hospital in Dallas. We've hired several techs since I started, too. Judging by the diversity of employees in my department, I don't think race is much of an issue. Either you didn't apply at my hospital or you didn't get hired because of a reason other than the color of your skin.

My point: it isn't easy to get a job in this climate. You have to be fully prepared and have all your bases covered to be competitive and stand out. I really doubt it had anything to do with your ethnicity, classy.

Race has nothing to do with ability. Black Americans are just as capable of being awesome techs and pharmacists as White Americans, Indian-Americans, Asian Americans, Latino/Hispanic-Americans (... is that PC? Never seen that before). I work with a Black guy who cooks amazingly! I call him "burnt" - he's the whitest Black guy I know (he doesn't like fried chicken!) And he's a charismatic and knowledgeable tech.

All in all, regardless of color, people have the opportunity to be able to do the same job. Your learned notions of other races are horrible for pharmacy, unless you clean it up.

Obviously the best way to build bridges is to burn as many as you can. If what you've said is true, then you had a genuinely terrible experience. Rather than blame a huge corporation for the attitude of a few pharmacists, perhaps you should apply elsewhere.

If this really did happen, did you call the DM's for the companies? One phone call might not get that person fired/reprimanded, but if a pattern has been established by previous applicants, then your call might be what's needed for the DM to take action.

Either way, playing the race card and using it as rationale for future racism on your part isn't what's best for pharmacy or any field. Don't make hiring/ personnel decisions based on race alone, or you're no different than the pharmacist who gave you a raw deal.

I've been to a few Southern states, NC and Virginia mainly and seriously never experienced any problems. I didn't stay very long so maybe I just lucked out... in either case though, it's not like I've NEVER experienced a form of racism... you just learn that some people are just that ignorant and move on with your life. That's merely my advice to the OP... maybe what you experienced WAS racism, but that doesn't mean you should turn back and treat others exactly the way that you were treated. It's true there are allot of ignorant racists 'round hea're. "They turk r jobs" and such.

But seriously there are also many, many people here who it would never occur to them to judge someone based on race. I doubt the people you would be running with (other pharmacy students and such) would ever make you feel uncomfortable. The higher up the educational ladder you go the less you have to deal with this kind of thing, at least in my experience. If any one's experience says otherwise I would be interested in hearing it.

I just went to my orientation today. I need to complete a few classes and on the job training at another store before I could work at the store I applied to.

learn as much as you can ... the more you learn the more you earn

keep that in mine..also..get your tech license do not depend on CVS they will try to delay your license..

once you know your stuff people can not take that a way from you.

speak up about your pay raise.. CVS will try to dupe you on this everytime

remember the trainer r not your friend they r there to keep you in line with the same paycheck when you got into the company and will try to delay your advance up your pay race due to your license as a tech...
