How does a deferred entrance work?

let's say that i get into medical school and i want to take a year off for travelling abroad and getting in touch with my culture. Do schools typically let students take a year off after they get into medical school? And do they have to reapply?

What about for someone who gets in through a waitlist, can they do the same?

Once you get an acceptance you have an acceptance - whether you got there through a waitlist or not.

However, all schools have different policies on deferment. Some are just ok with it, some want a really compelling reason for doing so before allowing it.

I'm on deferment right now. They evaluate your reason and let you know if they'll let you defer.

be accepted. write a letter saying you want to defer and why. they look at it and say yes or no.

oh and taking a year off is not a good reason. finishing a 3 yr research project or traveling to another country on a rhodes scholarship or something like that is a good reason.
