Robbins says that an incompetent valve causes volume overload. Agreed. The book gives examples stating that aortic regurgitation causes left ventricular overload and mitral regurgitation causes left atrial and ventricular overload.
My doubt is, why is the left atrium affected in mitral regurgitation. Doesn't regurgitation mean that the blood falls back into the ventricle?
Is it that the increased pressure in the ventricle is transmitted to the atrium? If so, why isn't the left atrium mentioned in aortic regurg?
