How does my science GPA stack up against other pre-dentals?

Hey everyone,

So I was really stupid in most of college and didn't really have a clear focus on what I wanted and thus no real ambition (not knowing where you're going or what you want kills your motivation), but ever since I decided on dentistry after shadowing and researching the field, I'm focused.

Basically, my grades are mostly in the B's, three C's, and a few A's, but now there's been a significant upward trend where I'm getting A's especially with a lot more credit hours than usual. I'll be applying to dental schools with a minimum of 3.2 science GPA and a possible maximum of 3.25 science GPA...

So here are my main questions --

1) Whenever I search online or look through these forums, I don't really see much on the topic or I'm never satisfied with the answers. So let's say I apply to dental schools (I'm looking at VCU, UNC, UMD, UMDNJ, WVU, Howard, etc.) with AROUND a 3.22 science GPA and a high DAT score... would I be competitive enough to be considered or would I be laughed off haha... Again, I have an upward trend, and I haven't taken the DAT yet but lets say I get a 22 or 23 on it... all hypothetical

I also have research experience where I've been given my own protein purification projects and work primarily with molecular biological techniques, like transformations, preparations of DNA minipreps, buffer preparations, gel preparations, etc. In addition, I volunteer once a week at a suicide/crisis hotline amongst a few other volunteering activities here and there with other service clubs on campus. I also have 100 hours of shadowing a general dentist, and I've been a TA for Microbiology (the professor I TA'd for is writing me a recommendation)... being a TA required lots of work, having office hours with students, tutoring, review sessions and PowerPoint preparations, etc.

2) Also, what is more valuable to dental schools? BCP or BCPM?

From the 2014 ADEA Guide:

averages for 2013 entering classes (school, oGPA, sGPA)

VCU, 3.6, 3.5
UNC, 3.5, 3.4
UMD, 3.5, 3.5
UMDNJ ?? (is this not in the guide?)
WVU, 3.5, 3.6
Howard, 3.2, 3.0

BCP
Too bad you can't list "SDN Wizard" on your application. Show's as much initiative and organization as anything I can think of . . .
Hah, I think doc is a few years past the application stage.

Yeah I can just imagine the interview now:

"Uh yeah I am a 7+ year member on SDN so you can see that I get pretty committed to things."

The links were actually really helpful; thank you!

But now I'm wondering, with a 3.22 science GPA and a HYPOTHETICAL DAT score of 22 or 23, do you think I can still get into a lot of those schools I listed?

I have to admit to assuming the same for myself . . . "19 is the average for accepted students, and seeing as how 30 is perfect, well I can safely assume that--as a great student--I'll get at least a 22 or something, right?" Maybe. Totally doable. But it's not as easy as it seems. According to doc toothache's guide, in 2009 an academic average of 19 was already the 80th percentile! 23 was the start of the 99th percentile. So yes a 23 bodes well for anyone. It's also more rare than the test score range suggests.

But go for it. 1 out of every 100 kids gets at least that high. No reason it shouldn't be you if you prepare.

Name and observant not often found in the same sentence.

Totally doable as long as you show that you can handke uppet level classes.

I had many C's and 1 F suring my first 2-3 semesters. Afterwards, i worked on getting good gradest to bump up the gpa.

I ended up with 3.4 ish which is below avg, but i still received some interviews.

If yiu can keep up your good work and bump it up to at least 3.4-3.5 you will be golden with 20+ dat.
