How does "that person" always get 100% on tests?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I mean, it's impressive how people can study however long they study and pull those kind of scores. I just wish they would be nicer about it. I mean, the whole class knows I'm a crappy student, and I'm upfront about it, so I approached some of these dudes and asked them for some advice. What I got was: "I just review the powerpoints lol."

Perhaps it's true. But I kinda doubt it.

You have to understand it's also bc it's hard to explain one's learning style and techniques, bc it's so inherent to you and how you're learned on how to learn during your formative years. It's hard to tell it to break it down to someone without sounding patronizing, as we all store memories differently.

Also, STOP PUTTING YOURSELF DOWN. Or I'm going to get @Anastomoses to come smack you.

I work 60 hours a week and we're long distance. Believe me, it's super tiring.

As an outpatient dentist, you most likely get your weekends off (in which you are not at the office working). That is what I am referring to with respect to work-life balance.

Woah, all right, all right, I'll give it a rest lol.

In that case, it's a CHOICE you make to work on Saturdays, owning your own business. Not true for the majority of medical specialties.

Lmao, what choice? I sold my soul to my boss when he paid for school.

(I'm being facetious. I know even with my stupid schedule I still have it pretty good)

Yes plz

Also why are all of you awake? Studying?? 😀

I'm done for the day, but I can't sleep. Watched and outlined 4 lectures, and did some BRS/Firecracker review, was a productive day overall, though I think I could have been more efficient.

Also, our professor today was a douche and spent a few minutes ranting about the students who "stay home and watch my lectures at 2 am at 2x speed." Haters gonna hate I think.

Yup, old school PhD professors will hate. Maybe if they actually taught the information well AND taught so that students can actually learn what is needed for the boards, med students would come. Recorded and podcasted lectures are an excellent improvement in medical school education.

Your avatar gives me the feels. Makes me want to give you a hug.

Does it actually help their scores and retention? Or do they just think it does? Don't they get really bad anxiety side effects from that drug?

I strongly believe adderall helps with memory retention. Plain and simple, if I read through a lecture without adderall: let's say I retain (for arguments sake) ~60% of the material. With a small dose of IR adderall, it would probably be ~80-90%. I only use it when tests are approaching/finals.

But is the memory, short term or long term? Does it disappear when the drug is metabolized? Do you get any anxiety sxs: tachycardia, etc.?

I have no idea who that is. It looks like a sad Asian male, who needs a hug.

Oh, well, I could use a hug sometimes, so thanks for the support. 🙂

The game in question is Path of Exile (an Action RPG similar to Diablo), and here's how it works. Instead of dividing people into discrete classes, every person gets a position on a grand unified tree. There are 3 attributes, Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence, each of which has its own section on the tree. Each of the 6 characters is affiliated with one or two of the 3 attributes. For example, the Witch is affiliated with Intelligence, and starts on the North side of the tree. The Duelist is affiliated with Strength/Dexterity, and starts opposite her on the South side of the tree.

I made my avatar the Duelist because IRL I look similar to his in-game model, down to the same hairstyle and skin color. Also, it motivates me to keep trying at what I do, because if a dude who starts away from all the Intelligence nodes can put together enough Intelligence to learn to cast curses on enemies, then I can put together enough Intelligence to figure out cranial nerve pathways.

No it's long term retention, at least in my case. The only side affect I get is reduced appetite.

Yes, but you probably consistently study as well. I doubt you can study an entire month's of powerpoints for the first time a few days before the test and be able to recall it all with ease with adderall.

In medical school? Definitely not.

Undergrad however... 😉

They have literally no life, period. No netflix. No spouse or kids for sure. Just study all day and all night.

More power to them if they can stay halfway sane doing it.

That's the jealousy talking. Some people are legitimately way smarter than you, get over it. I've never gotten a 100%, but I routinely score 10%+ higher than my friends who study significantly more than I do. Likewise, there are people in my class who score 100% routinely (at least they tell people they do) that I know don't study as much as I do.

1. Good study hygiene
2. Using reviews books and First Aid with coursework
3. Porn
4. Masturbation

I have no idea whether Adderall actually helps in memory and retention, or whether that person FEELS like it helps with memory and retention, due to the high the drug gives.

I agree. A lot of people I know say that using adderall is "cheating" (unless you're legitimately ADD or whatever) and is a PED. I don't think it's "cheating" since there is no evidence that it makes a non-ADD person a more efficient learner or better test taker. It's not like steroids and physical performance.

Little of column A, little of column B.

This wasn't the case in the beginning of the year, but lately I've found that those who study the most are often the ones in the bottom half of the class. They study constantly because if they didn't they would continue to fail exams as they did in the early part of the year. Meanwhile, those doing very well have figured out ways to streamline their studying and spend less time in the books than they did in August.

Very interesting topic imo (the difference between August MS1 and May MS1).. I'd like to see data on the relationship between study habits and performance spanning the school year.

Just my experience though.

I'm near one of those people who always gets hundreds and the trick isn't studying all day, which I can't because I got 2 ****ing kids and a clingy ass wife, but studying efficiently.

For example, I don't memorize all the signs and symptoms of a disease. I memorize key findings and work through it mechanistically. If you understand what happens behind the persentation, everything else is downhill as Dr. Sattar would say.

Of course, for some things, you just got to brute force memorize it and for that, I use flashcards. For instance, I put all the drugs that cause sexual dysfunction on a card and I pound it every day or nearly every day.

But then when do you find time to study the flash cards?

itt, people don't know what stimulants do.

At this point, I don't know what your game is, what you think of me, or what fate you wish upon me.
Oh Duelist. My game is beer pong. I think little of you. I have given your fate less thought than the urine in my toilet. But if you remain steadfast, the key to the Ruby Charmed Palace where the princess is held will surely be in your possession by daybreak. Be swift. Be brave. Sorry, I haven't played a video game since Legend of Zelda. Hope that was close enough.

I would smoke you in beer pong.

That being said, very well played.

Who plays beer pong?! It's patron pong and the challenge is to stay upright long enough to actually play. Duh.
Or at least that's what we used to do in school. Now I am old and boring 🙁

Patron (as in the tequila) pong in school? Good lord, your school was apparently living the life during dental school. Ain't nobody got money for that.

Yeah, I don't get all this video game obsession either.

Lol. I actually did play that once while home during undergrad. I didn't pay for the Patron, and the night DID NOT end well (nor the next morning for that matter).

Edit - actually it was Patron tippy cup.

Patron is cheapest when they come out with new flavors.

haha.

no yacht, unfortunately. i work for the family business. and thankfully no loans, but that was conditional upon me helping pay for grad school for my youngest sibling.

here's hoping he decides his bme undergrad degree is enough schooling ><
