This is really important....I need to know how the army, navy, and air force are able to contact us with scholarship offers. Is it because we check a box when we register for the MCAT? Do you remember what was asked? Perhaps we checked that we wanted our scores to be released to outside sources in order to receive information about scholarships? Does anyone know the exact process for how the military gets our contact information?

I think it's an MCAT thing. I don't remember getting anything until I got my scores back.

I actually fired them an email back asking how they got my email adress and knew i was applying to medicine.

I hope the AAMC didn't give away our email adresses.

It has to be the AAMC.

Don't they ask some military question on the fafsa too?

I received an email from the military congratulating me on my MCAT score and asked them about how they got it. The email I wrote to ask and the response is below. This is first hand through my own experience - i.e. not a friend of a friend or a paraphrase.

Captain Y,

Thank you for the information and I am considering the military, but I
am curious how you were able to know my MCAT score. How was this made
known to you? As for the HPSP program I will make a decision on that
when I know what schools have offered me an acceptance.

With my Compliments,
X

X,
The MCAT list is purchased by the military for purposes of
advertising the scholarship program. I guess they didn't mention that
when you signed up for the test. Just so you are aware, you don't need
a letter of acceptance to apply for the scholarship. I'd be more than
happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for your consideration and best of luck with the application
process.

Warm Regards,
Y

so can anybody 'purchase' this information, or does the military have some divine right?

This is really important....
Why? They're not out to get you. At least, not you specifically.
Perhaps we checked that we wanted our scores to be released to outside sources in order to receive information about scholarships?
Yes. There is a box that you can check allowing your email address and score info to be sent to outside interested parties for the sake of scholarships.

You will not go on spam lists because of the MCAT. They aren't selling their list to the highest bidder.

you mean an undemocratic right?

wait a minute! Our country is NOT democratic and free (and never really was) :scared:

It's the military they can get any information they want...except where WMDs are located.

Why do you need to know so bad, are you going to try to sue the military? Good luck with that.

I actually think it's a box you checked when you took the MCAT that said organizations could contact you about medical school admissions, scholarships, etc.

they are vicious with advertising those scholarships... I must've gotten at least 15-20 emails since I took the MCAT... funny thing is, I don't even qualify since I don't have a 3.5

???? Why do you need to know so badly? It was the box you checked when registering for the MCAT/AAMC. Can't you just delete or ignore their emails if you don't like them like anyone else?

I got a 2 on the MCAT and they sent me this letter too. Really though, they likely bulk email the same letter to every single person regardless of their MCAT scores. They probably don't even know or have access to your scores.

except for those of us above their recruiting age. i haven't heard from them for a few years now 👍

bout five years ago my mom filled out my contact information on some postcard from the Navy in order get...wait for it... a free pen.

they wouldn't stop calling me for months

Probably a wide variety of groups. I got letters from Caribbean schools, podiatry schools, you name it.

The email I got after I took my MCAT actually touted the military's "great travel opportunities", among other supposed benefits.

funny thing is, I don't even qualify since I don't have a 3.5
You don't need a 3.5 to qualify. You need a 3.5 and certain MCAT to automatically qualify to receive. If you're accepted into a U.S. med school, your odds are fairly good of getting the scholarship. Caveat emptor.

No, it's not. No more than how the Whoever School of Podiatry and the Wherever College of Osteopathy got mine. Calm down already.

Actually it is pretty important. I'm fact-checking for something being written.... I can't divulge all the details yet, though. Thanks everyone!

No emails/letters for me luckily as I'm not a US citizen. See... there are perks to being a permanent resident: no jury duty, no annoying military scholarship offers that I would refuse anyway 😀.

Your're fact-checking by asking a bunch of people who have no actual way of confirming your facts except through anecdotal evidence of what e-mails they have recieved?

The military really is relentless when it comes to advertising scholarships. My senior year of highschool was riddled with recruiters calling me several times a week. Regardless of how many times I said I was disinterested, or hung up on them, they kept calling. The only way I was able to get the Navy to leave me alone was to sit down and hear out their little presentation.

I'm not fact-checking with the anecdotal evidence of e-mails they received. I am fact-checking if there was a box that we checked when we took the MCAT to allow our contact information to be released to outside sources. This is what I remembered and answered when I was interviewed for an article but I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't wrong, that I didn't just invent this.

They definitely get it from the MCAT because the air force e-mail I got even starts with:
Congratulations on your superb MCAT scores!

So I assume they get it from that.

Speaking of which, the air force scholarship is actually almost tempting, because the recruiter e-mail claims they don't pull people out of residency to do general medical officer duty, although their supposed sponsorship of civilian residencies is probably still pretty much a joke, and your military service requirement apparently often gets in the way of any fellowship you want to do, so you'd have to delay it. But if I just wanted to be IM or something it'd be mighty tempting...

wait, you're asking how something associated with the u.s. government has access to something? i'm pretty sure the army could find out your bra size if they wanted to - EVEN if you're a guy.

Funny....I'm Canadian and I got the recruiting emails too...and laughed...after all, who really wants to go to Iraq. That Patriot Act thing is scary for us, because a lot of information databases are run by American companies with all our information on it, which could be used to incriminate someone as soon as they step across the border.🙁
