how does the match work?

I'm a MS3 so I didn't match this year , but since yesterday have been giving it a lot of thought and I'm just curious how the match actually works. I was reading some of the other threads and got pretty scared. For example what if I rank a program #1, and say they have 8 spots, as long as I'm ranked in one of their 8 spots, will I match with them? Say I'm #9 on their list but one of their 8 doesn't rank them high then will I match with them or do they automatically go to down my list to my #2 spot?? I don't know if this are dumb questions but I'm just starting to get scared.
