Hello, I'm new here and I had a few questions regarding research hours for when I plan to apply for med school.

What exactly does research mean in applications? Are there any specific conditions that need to be met?
Would a senior year long capstone project, that's required by the department I am in and being done by myself count for hours?
And does a Master's thesis defense go under this label?

Thank you very much.

When you write of your work and activities, you can tag an item as "research". This can include research that you do for college credit (likewise, students will list an artistic activity such as band or choir even if taken for college credit), that which you do as an unpaid volunteer, or paid research full-time or part-time or as work-study.

You might be doing 10 hours a week in a lab looking at protein folding or genetic variations in zebra fish or whatever. You add up those hours. Likewise, degree requirements that require systematic observations leading to new knowledge can certainly count.

Master's thesis, too.
