I'm relocating for work soon and looking to buy a house.
I will be on call with residents on site, patient mix includes trauma and obstetrics
how far away from the hospital would you feel comfortable ?

We have a doc and anesthetists in-house 24/7, but our on-call people have to be available within 30 minutes per policy. I would think your hospital or department has a policy regarding this.

If you are doing in house call and don't have to do back up call, it doesn't really matter. What's far do you want to be?
I am on staff at 8 hospitals and since I don't do OB or trauma, I don't have to be within a radius. I will be moving to be closer to some of the hospitals though cuz I am sick of the 20 to 35 minute drive and the crappier neighborhood we bought into.

My (our) presumption is you mean "How far away from the hospital while on call?".

Our group says within 30 minutes. If you're at a level I or II trauma center, the American College of Surgeons says you must have in-house anesthesia presence, which can be achieved by CRNA or resident, but the attending anesthesiologist must be available within 30 minutes.

Might be helpful to know for advising purposes that JobsFan is in Australia (see "location" under avatar). Probably doesn't change things a whole lot, but just in case.

How much is a house in wherever you are Australia? Like a 4 BR 2 bath house? Just wondering?

Median in my city - about 600k
Nice 4br in nice part of town 850k plus

Yes there's in house 'resident' taking call, residents of varying seniority

Really wondering how far from the action are you comfortable being while on call (in time) - 15 min seems reasonable ... but then a lot can happen in 15 min

Takes me 10 min including brushing my teeth and getting dressed. So far no terrible occurrences during that time, but we have a CRNA in house too. I stay in house if it would take me over 15 due to weather or large event traffic.
That is my personal comfort level. I also have a hotel suite on site to stay in so it isn't really a hardship.

We always have 2 residents and 1 attending in house. None the less, rule is you must be within 30min drive of hospital.

Being a level one with helicopter, we been blinded sided by *lvl 1 ETA 5min away by flight," so i couldnt imagine wanting to be more than 15min away.
