How Happy are You at Your School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree with Rezdawg...BU is great so far, our class is far more relaxed than I expected...so far so good. I agree that my opinion is likely to change in the clinic.

UConn was like prison sex.....it hurt like hell during and I'm just happy it's all over!

I am a 4th year @ NYU and i absolutely love it!!! i cannot tell you guys how amazing our faculty members are! I believe its all about the person-if you want to have a great experience, you'll make it happen-thats what i did. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to work with some bigwigs in clinical research and also in several honors programs...NYU is a great place to be and i would recommend it to someone in a heartbeat..any questions, pm me🙂

I looked at your profile and understand your confusion at this point. You'll get it later on, don't worry.

IUSD is not bad so far. My only main complaint is a lack of facilities for studying. Especially if you like to study after 11pm like me 😉. As far as gunners go, I don't think we have many of those. Everyone seems pretty cool. We do have a lot of people that study all the time and are trying really hard to get in the top 10, but I am not sure if I consider that gunning. All in all it's not bad. Workload is avg, definately not tougher than my undergrad.

I'd like to see a list of how happy people are with their schools: straight up, no BS.

This isn't a time to try to say its better than it is to try to make you feel good about your decision or, from the other side, a total pessimist about something that may be good. Just be honest. Does it suck or is it enjoyable?

Please state your school.

I am VERY happy with my school ! I am FAR AWAY from it and working in the "real world" LOL! The fun starts AFTER dental school 😉 That seems to be the consensus among my fellow "dentites" (dental school friends) .

Dental school is inherently stressful as is the profession of dentistry to a certain extent. Dental schools are under a certain amount of pressure themselves to develop their students as much as possible in relation to that fact. Unfortunately, there are always going to be faculty and students that use the circumstances that entail a dental education to their advantage in their egotistically and deranged attempts at self-satisfaction in viewing the demise of others. However, this degradation of the human condition could be considered when mentioning any profession, even in the ministry. Take care and GOD bless.

Silly rabbit....to make things easier you should have done 'it' with only one prison buck-stud at a time.

I wouldn't expect anything less from UConn SanDM 😀

I am a first year dental student at UNC...one month into D school..and in the process of taking three exams this week (gross anatomy, Biochemistry, and histology) but I love this place all the same.. the faculty are great.. my classmates are great...chapel hill is great....and my new apt is great....i guess you could say that i am quite happy with my choice overall...lets see what I think 4 years from now.. 🙂

Third year dental student at UCSF:

This place has been nothing like I had imagined, and just about everything that I've wanted.

👍

Dental school opens doors to a myriad of things, some of it life-changing. Enjoy it while you can, it's only 4 years!

Wow. This kind of happiness makes me sick. 🙂

BCSD:

No joke curriculum-wise but couldn't have asked for a better school.

Finally they reairconditioned the main lecture room 🙂
Now I'm happy.

I love it so far, but we haven't quite finished the first quarter. I hear clinic has lots of red tape and upper classmen say it can get tedious. But, I think the faculty are fantastic and more helpful than any other faculty I've worked with at other schools.

Oh yeah? I can think of more descriptive words than "red tape" and "tedious", but I don't want to get banned so let's just wish you good luck. 😉 :luck:

I just started at UCLA and so far I love it. It's definitely alot of work but I think when everything is said and done, its all worth it. I love my class, everyone is so cool. THe admissions committee def did there job in making sure the class was well rounded and diverse. The faculty is also very good. So far they have been nice and supportive. Dr. BIbb is like a mom to us. Everyone is great!!!! It's only the second week but I am loving the school, (not the workload though). A strong undergrad presence is important for me because i like the fact that i can go to athletic events on the weekends and do things other than dentistry while showing UCLA pride at the same time. Go Bruins, BEAT CAL!!!!!!!!!

BUMP

Looking specifically for Maryland, UMDNJ, Columbia and Nova students to give input... Now that the first semester is almost over, do you have more you can say?!? Any 3rd or 4th years out there who can help? I have to decide by Jan 13th.... 😕

I'd also like to know about how the Penn students feel.

I've never had prison sex so i wouldn't know, but it sounds pretty painful. i hated dental school and it was everything i imagined not to be. haha, glad its over. i give props to anybody that actually ENJOY/ENJOYED dental school - there are always few weird ones that enjoy it, but hey whatever floats your boat. :meanie:

I'd also like to know about maryland, umdnj and temple....any comments or things u wish u knew before u went there?

Do you mind sharing some of the "shady activities" at Temple?
I'd like to know more specifically about it. Thanks. :scared:

I think most of the happy campers posting here are still in pre-clinic but I could be wrong. I too was once very proud Temple student believing all the BS I had heard during interviews. Once sophomore year was over, I began to see the light...and being on student council has helped me witness the shady activity going on here first hand.

This reminds me of something interesting that happened during my Buffalo interview. One of the interviewers asked what I imagine dental school will be like. I sort of popped out what I thought to be the expected answer (making sure everything was true...I just wanted to sound really excited and positive, which I am!) I said how it'd be more fascinating than undergrad since ALL the topics are what I want to be studying (instead of general education and whatnot) and how it will be filled with challenges and constant stimulation, and that I was excited overall.

She said "that's weird...no one has ever said she/he was looking FORWARD to dental school! Everyone says it'll be hell!"

I mean, students should know what they're getting into, but I just don't see how there is overwhelming and unexpected stress....do you think the people who hate every moment of the process maybe are more interested in the lifestyle or financial aspects of dentistry and not the science or study of the mouth itself? Isn't this what people want to be doing???

I'm interested to know how this actually plays out once you're in school....

well, a lot of what you are studying the first two years is not in fact directly related to dentistry - you will be learning biochem, histology, immunology, and other basic medical sciences which relate to the body but not specifically to dentistry. also, even if you love what you're learning, the sheer volume and the stress of having so much to do at once can really dampen your enthusiasm for school in general. for example i love practicing my preclinic skills, and i even kind of like waxing for dental anatomy - but when you have so much other stuff to study for, these projects can often become just another (very time-consuming!!) thing you have to get done.

I suppose it's both sad an amazing that even the most fascinating tasks can become tedius with enough stress and repitition!!

I'm still happy with my decision to attend Penn. Sure, there are days when I feel like I have been feed through a meat grinder, but I understood that dental school was going to be tough before I signed up. I've made some good friends here and the other students are really helpful as well, the faculty are very approachable and many will bend over backwards to help you.

What about the finances? Are you nervous about paying it back?

No. I know that I will have the means to do so (it might mean that I'll have to delay my purchase of that glittering European sportscar. Oh, well).

anyone from texas willing to share their opinions about their school??

I second this. Come on Baylor, Houston, and San Antonio dental students...throw us a bone.

That's awesome! Good to see you still have the time to post... LOL. Not I. I am happy here. As you mention, lots of work. 👍

UMDNJ here, and while I'm only a d-1/3 (one trimester down, an umpteen billion to go) I really like it so far. I mostly love my class - there are some people I can't stand, but you'll get that anywhere - and many of the professors are excellent, many of the upperclassmen are really helpful, and from what I see of the clinics there's no shortage of patients with weird/unusual problems. Yeah, I dislike the DVD curriculum thing and I just want to poke some instructors with one of my sharp pointy instrument things, but overall I think it's the best choice I could have made.

I'm going to have to check back in two years to see what I'm saying then 😀

We just had our first test here at UPenn, and the pace has really picked up. There are also some administrative matters that do not thrill me about the school, but I am still pleased that I am here.

I heard that leadership at PENN is going through a lot of flux right now. How long has this been going on? Is it really affecting the students?

Any current Louisville students willing to share?

I'm VERY curious and haven't heard much negative or positive information about the school.

I have two good friends there right now.

For the good- Well respected program, super friendly people
For the bad- You can never get in-state tuition unless a spouse transfers a job there and the tuition is getting high and rising every year.

They've told me more, but I'm too tired to remeber it all right now.
