How Happy are You at Your School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just finished my first semester at USC and I like it quite a lot. I enjoy studying through PBL more than I would a traditional lecture. They've slowly been adding mini-"rotations" recently to get us started on radiology / patient admitting / etc...USC also has a quite a few opportunities for hands on experience through their mobile clinic. This semester we had our first patients. We placed sealants on 5th graders at a local elementary school.

Pitt anyone?? I am very curious...

Any current UTennessee students that wouldn't mind sharing their experiences?

Any Case students??? How is Cleveland? How diverse is the student population?? How do you like the school in general?

any NYU students??? and UOP students??
kindly share your experiences!!!

Speaking of UConn being better than having cancer...I don't know about that. I attended another dental school before coming to UConn, and I regret my decision to have to transfer with all my heart. UConn seems great on paper and at the interview, but in reality it is devastating. I'm not talking about the courseload, I'm talking about all the other details. The best advice I could give anyone would be to avoid this place like the plague. I mean, I know that there are some other schools out there that are just as bad as this place, but try to avoid them too. If someone had told me what I was up against before I came here, I would have thought that person was a compulsive liar, along with other mental defects. The truth would have seemed too outrageous to believe. But just remember that truth is stranger than fiction. The fact that a classmate described it as prison sex doesn't do justice to the insanity of this administration.

I feel so close to you, Cat'sMeow. After all, misery loves company. PM me and we can talk. It helps to have a good network in this horrible place.

It's funny how the new UConn first years, are behaving like little intellectually insecure bastards. Get a grip punks, if you can't handle it fail out and go to another school, don't be on-line punks and try to air out UConn on this little site b/c you had to give up a little of your lives for 2 yrs, I did it, my classmates did it and we all strongly recommend to admin to keep the curriculum as is. FINE, go be a tooth mechanic somewhere else. Little bastards, no school pride.....really worse than cancer...sodomy. Bitches. Didn't Dr. T tell you this is an "exteremly demanding curriculum?" ohh the lure of coming to the numebr one dental school gave you short term amnesia. You have the opportunity to be educated at the highest level, head and shoulders above some other schools and you scoof at it like it is nothing. Well I come form a very disadvantaged background, a daily struggle, education is alawys good. Go cheap talk something else, but don't give the school that's going to grace you with teh previlidge of saying I graduated from the only dental school that has some right to claim #1 ( and ooh yes you will make sure to mention it every chance you get when applying for residencies or jobs). BE A MAN AND SUCK IT UP.

drgoro, please do not insult individuals.

If you read my original post, you would see that I specifically stated that I was not talking about the courseload. I agree that the courseload is difficult and that we were told so from the beginning. I agree that if you don't want a difficult courseload that you should go elsewhere. My comments were specifically not about the courseload but about the professional and emotional harassment. After all, there is more to a school than it's strict academics. MsPurtell, the person who said this place was better than cancer, has graduated; I am an upperclassman; and Cat'sMeow is also an upperclassman. None of us are first year students whining and complaining of the courseload. Like I said, it has nothing to do with the courseload.

Please demonstrate the same professionalism and respect to others you are asking to have extended to your institution - your behavior, just as much as theirs, is a reflection of the calibur and character of the students there.

Second call-out for a Tufts student. Hopefully it will be a positive comment. Either way I guess I'll find out in 30 days..... 😕 😀

Couldn't be happier, we are in the fourth week now and things are getting rough slowly. It's getting busier and busier as time goes. The admin. at UOP is top notch and they have found a great formulation of helping the students to relax and take breaks from school with TONS of functions. UOP is the place for me!!! I love it here and I am extremelly grateful for the ability to attend such a positive institution.

This place has been nothing like I had imagined, and just about everything that I've wanted.

👍

Dental school opens doors to a myriad of things, some of it life-changing. Enjoy it while you can, it's only 4 years!
Another vote for UCSF. Great staff, great students and great city. 👍

UConn sounds like a friendly place to go to. I went to a state school for undergrad and was treated as just another number. The more students that they filtered through the more money they got. Nobody cared about the students besides that they wanted the students to do well to make them look well, otherwise students were a hassle that had to be dealt with. I worked at a private dental school after that for a few years and found out that students were treated so much better. I asked the faculty why the students were treated so well. They always said that they should be because they pay their salaries with their outrageous tuition. I was convinced that I needed to go to a private school with a small class size and then have the military pay for it. I now am at Arizona. Faculty and students get along really well. There is an open door policy, and they are more then willing to change something if students or faculty find out that something doesn't work. They don't stress academics as much here, but I doubt that you can get a better clinical education. That is also what I wanted because I knew from undergrad that I would forget everything didatically after graduation if not the day after I took a test. It is a great school to learn the important stuff but not obsess over stuff that you will never need to know, while living a life outside of school.

Interesting thread, but all this happy-happy stuff has to be taken with a grain of salt. ALL dental schools have their numerous problems and aspects that stink. There is no such thing as a perfect school where everyone is happy.

I'm not saying that everyone should blast their school, but please spare us of your "everyone loves each other, our school is perfect" BS talk.. 🙄

I hate my school, from d1 thru d3 its been one hugh pain in the ass, or maybe i am just beginning to hate dentistry, or may be i just hate both 😕

I just finished my first year at Columbia and I'm pretty content.

It's all about how much of yourself you put in (academically AND socially) which will determine how happy you are. I've noticed that of the people who post from my school, complaining about how awful it is, those are usually the people who 1.rarely show up to class or 2.rarely show up to social outings (and many times, both 1&2). How will you be happy if you're failing or you don't know anyone?

You've already paid so much (financially and mentally) to be where you are, why not just enjoy it? Get involved, know your books and your classmates/friends.

Starting my second year at UCSF.... in October. I'm loving the 3.5 month summer we get after our first year. But really, I'm happy with the school and the people in my class. Solid instructors, enough structure but enough flexibility.

So you will hate it if you don't get to do another one?

I rarely ever missed class and I had a great social network. That social network kept me from dropping out due to the emotional exhaustion of being emotionally abused!

The first year at NYU has been remarkable. I can't seem to find the time to take hold of all the opportunities at the school. The venerable faculty/staff have been very supportive and respectful. They listen and adjust whenever feasible. I can't vouch the same for the administration, but they are the background noise that we try not to focus on. Overall, I have a big heart and that's why I'm at a big school that is none like any other in the world.

You have all this negativity, yet not one single instance was mentioned. Tell us specifically what you dislike, then I would get a better idea of what's so negative about it.

Our school don't have much functions. Well, let me list some of them: lecture on some bizarre science stuff, study club meeting, health fairs every other weekend, meetings which begin to loose its meanings for me.

I'm not happy with my school these days. Too much negativity from everyone, and that is rubbing off on me. I need to get out of this mud,

cats meow knows what he's talking about.....

uconn forces psych testing on students and sends them forcibly to drug and alcohol counselors even when there is no evidence that tehre is drug or alcohol abuse.

holy $hit. For real?

I really like Maryland so far, and I think I'll like it even more when we move into the new building in a few weeks. Yes, I'm a first year so things might change, but it definitely seems like the older students are happy with Maryland as well. That was something that stood out to me on my interview - I just got a really good vibe from the students here.

Any foreign trained dentists enrolled in international dentist programs posting here? I wonder what it is like in an accelerated program. Share the good, bad and ugly! Courses? Schedules? Time for anything else? Patient pool?

Bump!

I'd love to hear about: Penn, Pitt, Maryland, UCLA

Thank you!!🙂

Any students from Stonybrook?! Pros, cons?! Im eager to know!! Thanks 🙂

4 yrs at UConn was miserable, sent me into a depression, probably would've been much worse were it not for friends

I just finished my first quarter at UOP... so far so good.. the curriculum is crazy intense though. classmates are a little too competitive but probably the same everywhere. a lot of activities (professionally and for fun). i'm pretty happy here in general both with the environment and with the quality of education i'm receiving.

if you are talking about str8 numbers, the majority of things are fine here (Univ of CT), but there are a couple of miserable profs that make things horribly miserable, not to mention that the administration does jack**** about it

my 2 cents: go somewhere else

The schools that have the least amount of complaints are probably doing a better job. I hardly ever here a bad word about some schools while others have a rather poor reputation according to posters here.

The most disappointing aspect of dental schools are all the pompous a*** that are in charge, many of whom are completely void of people skills. It is amazing the amount of arrogance , favoritism, and shady business deals that goes on, much of which has nothing to do with excellence in dentistry.

There are many people working at dental schools who should be fired immediately, but the shortage of instructors has allowed many dental schools to become the civil service, providing jobs for life. Supply and demand has watered down quality assurance in many cases leaving a blurry line between a challenging curriculum and faculty ineptitude.

To anyone who would listen: Be very careful of where you attend dental school, be advised about all that is being said here. Just b/c things are hard to believe does not make them inaccurate.
