I figure ochem is already hard enough spread across three quarters, but would it be realistic to take the entire series during an 8 week summer quarter and actually do well? It's offered at my community college and I'm debating whether or not to try and attempt it. Obviously I don't want to just pass, I want to get an A, but I can only imagine the amount of work and studying required to jam a year worth of material into just 8 weeks. Any thoughts?

8 weeks for a whole year would be crazy I here its hard enough to do ochem 1 and 2 over 15 weeks. Around here its split up into ochem 1 and 2. You can take it over summer break but its ochem 1 for 7.5 weeks and them ochem 2 for 7.5 weeks. We have spring and summer semesters that are 7.5 weeks a peice. I would check with the community college because it might be something like I just described.

At our school, we have O-chem 1 and 2 in a nine week period (including labs). It's tough but certainly doable. You have to be dedicated because we did 2-3 chapters a week, so you really can't take a day off, you have to be on top of everything.

That said, I would highly recommend it, because it saves you a whole academic year. It's a rough two months, but when you don't have to do it over a whole year, it's definitely worth it. O-chem was my second best section on the DAT. I barely studied for it because I had learned it so well because it was so concentrated over that two month span.

A friend of mine tried to do that last summer, because of her timeline for application to med school. She's very bright, but she's having to retake the series again.

My friend did it 2 summers ago and did fine in class. He also did very well in Ochem on DAT but you have to be dedicated: you shouldn't have any life outside the ochem class. It's quite stressful with 3-4 ochem labs a week along with writing lab reports for them and catching up with the lecture.

Another friend took only the third quarter class last summer. She was miserable during that time but got an A.

I took ochem in a summer session just as you described, it was around 8-9 weeks. It's not a misconception that it is in fact more difficult during the summer, but it is a mistake to compare the difficulty of it to a normal semester's ochem class alone. What do I mean? Well, it's obvious isn't it, if you take ochem during the regular semester you'll also be taking it with several other classes, whereas in the summer you'll only be taking ochem. So in fact, the scaled difficulty is probably the same. I was actually told by both professors that during the summer they cover more material and the students often score better on the ACS exam.

You'll have to put in the time and effort of course, just like you would during a normal semester with 4-5 classes if you wanted a good grade. Just my opinion though. We did have a nice caveat, which you probably will have as well, we could drop the class after the first exam and be fine transcript-wise.

This is very true, well said.

Call me crazy but I did it! It is doable and I got an A in each class. I actually enjoyed it believe it or not. I took 1 and 2 and it was about 8-9 weeks. Lecture & Lab! OC is actually one of my favorite sciences, but you shouldn't have anything else planned like a job because it is a lot and if you want that A, you do have to be dedicated. Good Luck!

Did you do it in NYC?

I preferred O-chem in a single 10 week summer block (including labs). For me, it was nice not having to focus on other subjects as well. You will actually need to study less, since you will have less time to forget material presented in lecture (we had weekly exams).

The only downside is that I forgot the material as fast as I learned it once the class was over. However, it came back rather quickly when studying for the DAT. Due to the rushed nature of summer courses, my professor wasn't able to cover 2 important chapters (not sure if this is a common occurrence). Also, all of your friends will be kicking back and enjoying the summer while you are at the library. If you are okay with that than by all means go for it!

Thank for the reply everyone. I just looked at the time schedule for last summer quarter and thought how hellacious it would be. Lab is from 7:30-10:15 T-F and lecture is from 10:30-2 every day. Each 10 week quarter is compressed into 2.5 weeks. I think I'll pass, unless I can somehow prepare myself and study ahead of the class so I'll have a general understanding of the material before it even starts.

Everything crammed into five weeks would be tough. When I took a nine-week session, I read the first six chapters in the book before I got to class. It really helped because even though I didn't understand the material exactly when reading it, I was at least familiar with it and had seen it before.

I never took orgo in the summer, but if you think about it, its not going to be that much different.

when you take orgo the "usual" way (fall or spring or in your case - 3 quarters) ur also taking other courses along side it. So you have to prepare for orgo + other classes.

But when you take it over an intensive 8-week system (I imagine its the only class your taking), you going to devote 100% of your studying into orgo alone..... I just think this is a better deal..........However, do expect to study ALOT

Thats another reason why I liked it, basically Orgo was my job for the 8-9 weeks. Surprisingly, I didn't forget it, I think its still in my mind lol Were the chapters on amino acids and sugars (or something along those lines)?

Sorry, I totally missed your reply. Love the attitude though, very Angelina.😉

I asked because I did the same thing, and only remember having one option which was QCC, was wondering if we were in the same class or something perhaps. I remember Hunter didn't offer it, only the labs or something weird, and City College had like a weird extended summer version.
