How important in the admissions process would having a relative who is alumni?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not as important as having a high GPA and high DAT scores.

Case in Point: I have an applicant buddy who's dentist father actually worked at the school as a bench prof and he still didn't get in his first try.

it really depends on the school.. i think private schools weigh the alumni factor more than public schools do.

As long as your stats are at or above the bare minimum...being the son of a NYU alumn who was the son of an NYU alumn is HUGE. Don't underestimate connections, but every case is different.

Excellent, I like it when people tell me what I want to hear 🙂

So should I be mentioning this in my PS or what?

No, you should put it in your AADSAS application though, they have questions specifically for this...

Q: Do you have any relatives who are dentists, are in dental school, or who have studied or are studying Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting, Dental Laboratory Technology or related dental fields?

Q: If yes, indicate name, relationship, name of school, dental degree or certificate, year of graduation or expected graduation:

Ah thank you, this is my first time applying 😳

Hmm, weird that my pre-prof. advisor didn't mention this...

my best friends dad is the current president of the alumni board of dental school X, and the dean basically said that she had to make bare minimum to get an acceptance.

That your dad and grandad went to NYU dental and you want to go there too? I'm sure the other schools you are applying to would not be too fond of you.
Seriously, like someone else said there's a portion of the AADSAS that deals with 'dental ancestors' 😀 use that. Good luck.
