how important is gpa and mcat

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
if you mean by committe the pre-med committe at your university then its everything but if you're talking about medical school then i believe it plays a pretty major role. Its not ALL they look at but it accounts for roughly 60% of their decision i guess....

Actually, it depends on the school, entirely. Some schools admit people with poor MCAT scores, or a below average GPA or a both. Some highly qualified applicants with skyrocketed GPAs and MCAT scores dont even get into many schools. Depends on the schools, work history, volunteering, ECs, etc. It would be quite impossible to tell, actually.

If you mean admissions committe after your interview, then I would think that it is relatively minor. You wouldn't have gotten the interivew if your stats were not competitive. I would imagine that they will review everything again and take everything into consideration, but your numbers probably play less of a role in the final decision than they did in the beginning. :luck:

How important is mcat and gpa to committee members in making their final decision
Each school weighs components of your application differently. In essence, you are judged on the whole package. Providing that one component isn't far below the school's standard, other components may offset it.

What the **** do you want us to say?! They are the two major factors influencing who medical schools consider and who they discard...

That's a ridiculous question to ask.

It surely matters more pre-interview than post-interview though seeing as though most DO schools only interview those who they are legitimately interested in... best of luck!

i totally agree i mean im not trying to mock the person who started the thread but of course it matters. maybe there are some cases where a person has a great 'story' but a great story with a 20mcat and 2.0 wont do much.

personally my ug gpa wasnt great and im hoping strong post-baac work and high mcats and ec's will balance that

they are the only important things. what ratio? i have no idea. maybe 60/40,40/60, 50/50, 30/70, 70/30... only adcomm knows

Anything outside GPA and MCAt is for your own personal development.

id say if your gpa was poor , and your MCAT was average , then maybe the adcom would look at the rest of your file before making a decision. if you have some really stellar research, or field /clinical work, maybe ud get lucky. but if you have a really cruddy gpa and mcat , and nothing really "super" shining on the rest of your file, you're probably out of luck.
