i have a question. say you are an average applicant (as in, your gpa and mcats are right in that median range) for a med school. how important is the pS? do you think that a mediocre or bad one can actually prevent you from getting an interview?

...yes. And even if you get an interview, the main topic is often the content of your personal statement so it's best to put a lot of thought into it.
