I'm a current M1 on Army HPSP and I was wondering how much of a requirement/how recommend it is to do research for say a neurological surgery or orthopedic surgery. I know there's only 1 spot for NS for all 3 branches and things can always change in the future, but I want to try and put myself in the best possible position.

Thanks!

You should have research if at all possible. Doesn’t need to be time consuming, a case report is pretty easy to do. Basically it’s extra points you are leaving on the table if you don’t do it.

It absolutely cannot hurt, and it absolutely will help. Is it necessary? No. But you’re lookin for a leg up in a competitive specialty. Especially for Ortho.

It’s far more important in ortho to increase your max press, however. You need to be working on that.
