How important is the MCAT writing section for med school admissions? I screwed up both of them this afternoon, didn't have time to finish writing so my conclusion "paragraphs" were basically single sentences. (And the rest of my paragraphs weren't too coherent either.) What is a competitive writing grade that medical schools would like to see?

Also, if someone get a high ps/v/bs score and a low writing score, would that look bad to the med school admissions officials?

The official reason behind the writing section is to assess your communication skills. I guess if you score high enough in the other sections to secure an interview, you'll get another chance to redeem yourself.

I got a low writing score so I called basically every admissions office for the schools I was applying to. Each one said it was either (a) not important at all, or (b) could be made up for with a good VR score.

to the OP: i COMPLETELY feel your pain...i BOMBED the writing part big time...sad part is i dont think the scores for my other sections will help me...im screwed

I wrote about depiction of Kamasutra in relation to regulating art by the government...

did u really? lmao!!

yup lol...........I cracked up when I was writing it........and cracked up again when I re-read it..........I bet the graders'll crack up too lol

I've also heard that doing a good job on your personal statement can counter a low WS score.(Of course I was graded horribly on that section and got no interviews so take that for what it's worth.)

I wrote about Piss Christ and the Danish Mohammed cartoons. Oh damn it I spelled Mohammed with a U.

An admission officer said that good WS score can make up for a not so good VR.

WS is just as important as any other section for Canadian schools; I've heard marks below a Q tends to raise a flag.

^^ i don't think its as important.. you just need to make the cutoff. The other sections are still more important that WS in canada. in Us however, they don't give a crap about it.

Are you sure about that?? UWO and Queen's have cut-offs, UofT uses the whole MCAT as a flag, and except for the schools that don't even use the MCAT, the rest factor in the WS essentially as equivalent to the other three sections for the operative score. Check out UBC, Calgary, Alberta, Manitoba, and some schools on the east coast if you still don't agree.

Maybe, if you got 10+ on verbal you would have been ok?

Dang, you mean if I got 1 more point I would have been alright? Damn :D (Dave who though a 10 on the VR was "fine". Guess not, but I can always tell the adcoms that a grade of M stands for marvelous :D )

Yea queens and uwo have WS cuttoffs (uoft has one too but its a lower cuttoff), i'm pretty sure they just check to see if you make the cutoff, after that its your score on the other sections that count the most... or so ive ehard.

Queens uses the whole score to determine who's interviewed and then throws the MCAT score out the window....

UWO is heavily interview related to 50% interview 25% MCAT score and 25% GPA.... not sure if they actually regard sections differently when the go back to review the MCAT though
