How is it possible for a MD to have a DEA number that starts with "M" ???

I thought M was for midlevel practitioners only. How does an MD end up with a DEA number that starts with M?

Good question....maybe a NP or PA who practiced first, and then went back to get their MD, so they keep the same DEA #?
