Hello,

I am not sure about how UMDNJ compares to Wayne State or DMC, but being a student at NJMS, I can give you some feedback. UMDNJ is a generally a good place to train, owing mainly, to the crazy pathology that you will see there. Since the coming of Dr. Ellner, things have been improving gradually. Dr. Reteguiz the program director is very pro-resident and they are very responsive to residents concerns. The teaching is generally very good and I really enjoyed my medicine rotation as well as my AI. As far as fellowships are concerned, however, NJMS suffers because of the competition from Penn and NY programs. To get a cards fellowship, you will have to work hard and most people who were accepted into our own cards program have been chief residents. If you are looking for a solid medicine program you wont' miss here, but I have to be honest and tell you that of all individuals who are interested in medicine (and fellowships subsequently) from our class, maybe 1 or 2 are staying (out of 32)! Dont' get me wrong, people match in cards, but what I am saying is that it's much harder, say if compared to any of our competitors in NY or Penn.

Hi there,

thank you for your reply. So it seems like most of the UMDNJ med students avoid pursuing an IM residency at the same institution.

Do you know if UMDNJ GI or Cards fellowship invariably take a certain number of their own residents or not?

thanks again

Don't know anything about UMDNJ-Newark though I think I remember there being another post from somebody on these boards. I'd suggest doing a search on it and seeing what you can find.

I don't have personal experience with Wayne State/DMC but I think they have a pretty close connection with Henry Ford which has a good rep for cardiology. I had a friend there who went on to do cardio at Henry Ford years back, but I'm not sure how their fellowship match is now. I'd suggest looking at the materials they gave you or asking the PD for it.
