I'll assume a text book. It depends on the material; but, for say a physiology chapter on renal 30-40 pages = 1 hours( too kind of undrestand it) 1.5 hours (to learn it).
~2 hours if I'm reading to familiarize myself with the material but don't intend to memorize anything. More if I'm really trying to learn it, less if I'm just breezing through for review.
I'm going premed, 2years in already, and even for my intro psychology course, I would spend about 4 hours on a 30-40 page chapter.
Am I really slow?
How does everyone else compare to me?
ps. In my defense, that psych course was the first psychology course ever taken so all the concepts were new to me.In addition, I also know everything in the chapter afterward.
I usually plow through 30-40 pages of moderately dense text in about an hour to an hour and a half.
A huge key for retaining the material is creating an outline of the material while you are reading. Example: when you hit a new sub-section, type up the header, and bullet point all the key points. Skip all the very small details and redundant examples. I guess this works because I am pretty fast at typing, 'cuz otherwise I'd be laboring over the Mac and the textbook for days to do this with all of my classes!
