How long does it usually take to hear back from a school after an interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am wondering the same thing! I feel stupid contacting the program, but is there a certain time point at which it would be appropriate to inquire about my status?

Its been over a month now for me since my first (and only) interview and still not a peep from the school or my POI. I'm beginning to fear no news is bad news, and that they have extended offers to a few students, and they are waiting for the students to accept or decline the offer. However, like I said, I haven't been informed of being waitlisted either. Sorry for not answering your questions, haha, I'm new to this too and unsure what to expect.

After the interview weekend, in fact probably the day following the interview, I'm fairly certain each professor had to have an idea of which student s/he wanted to accept. I'm sure most schools form an admissions committee and have to approve as a group which students to offer admission. The only thing I can think of to delay informing students of their status (over a month, assuming they haven't notified any) is determining the amount of financial aid they can offer each student, which for the program I applied to isn't set in stone like other PhD programs.

I know it probably varies from school to school, but how long does it usually take to hear back schools after an interview? Thanks! I am eagerly and nervously waiting to hear back! 😱

You're right, it does vary from school to school. My school has a pretty quick turn around. Social event on a Friday evening, interviews on Saturday. Lab meeting on Monday for all the current grad students to give input. Advisors meet during the week to finalize the list and Thursday or Friday those that are accepted or wait listed are contacted. So basically a week turn around.

I heard back the next day from one school (where I am now a student), but another school didn't tell me anything until after April 15th (at which point I had already assumed I was rejected). Other schools took a few days to let me know. So yes, it varies, but I would say that it's very rare to not hear anything from a school and later get an acceptance (if you are put on a waitlist you should be notified of that as soon as it happens). If you want to know for sure (and it's been more than a couple of weeks), there's no harm in e-mailing the POI and inquiring about your status (you may or may not get a response).

Hearing all of these " I heard within a few days " stories are freaking me out! I had my interview on the 2nd and am anxiously waiting to hear back. Fortunately the two forums I have been checking do not have any new updates. It is possible that the school you are concerned about is waiting on funding before they make their decisions

How about if you had interviewed on an early interview date, and there is another, later interview date for that program. I suppose I cannot expect to hear back until after all candidates have had their interviews?

Any thoughts?

I had a couple of programs specifically say that they still had people to interview so they would not make offers until after that had taken place. Even if they didn't say that to you, I would not expect to hear until after the second interview day. Good luck!!

Makes sense. Thanks!

It really varied for me. One of my school psych programs let me know the Monday after our Friday interview. Two other schools took approx. two weeks to get back to me with an offer
