Specifically, how many for each of the categories:
  • Academic Enrichment Programs
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5)
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10)
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10)
  • Research Experience (limit 5)
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5)
I know its about quality over quantity, but I'm just wondering how many activities some other people listed.

I have 1 enrichment, 3 awards, 2 shadow, 4 extracurricular, 1 research, and 1 work experience.

Just curious, what's academic enrichment?

I have 14 in total.
  • Academic Enrichment Programs ((nothing)
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5) ((2, both Dean's list, I bunched them up with corresponding schools))
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10) ((6-I shadowed many specialties and listed them separately))
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10) ((4))
  • Research Experience (limit 5) ((1))
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5) ((1)
Curious, what kind of awards do you have? I have none and dont really know how to go about getting one.

I have 21?

  • Academic Enrichment Programs 0 Here, I had no idea what this was
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5) I put 4, Deans, and few scholarships I received, also MVP award from athletics.
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10) I have 5, from different specialties and different GPs
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10) I put 8 here, Volunteer, Clubs, Sports was a big thing for me in Uni.
  • Research Experience (limit 5) I had 1 hear from my last year of University researching in a lab.
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5) I just put my 3 most recent ones.

  • Academic Enrichment Programs 2... but these were probably kind of a stretch. Oh well. This section is strange!
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5) 5. I had to group some together in one heading (ie. Dean's list multiple times)
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10) 3. I shadowed three dentists/specialists.
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10) 8. I didn't include anything that had a piddly little number of hours. 🙂
  • Research Experience (limit 5) Zilch.
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5) 5. And yes, I did include a job I had in high school that I held for multiple years.
So, altogether, I had 23.

My best advice is not to feel like you "have" to fill up all the spaces. 🙂 Quality over quantity.

  • Academic Enrichment Programs 1...not sure if this belong in here
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5) 2...a scholarship and an honor
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10) 8...kind of went crazy here
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10) 8...alot of sports and random clubs
  • Research Experience (limit 5) 1....cant imagine having to fill 5
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5) 5....worked at alot of places, changed my mind alot

Can I play? I like this format of a simple breakdown, even though quality > quantity, generally. 27. I could have clumped better. But whatever. I scored some acceptances and they still haven't said anything about it.
  • Academic Enrichment Programs 1: 5
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5): 5 (nothing fantastic; included clumped Dean's, scouts, scholarship)
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10): 6 (included a couple piddly ones)
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10): 7 (clumped minor ones together)
  • Research Experience (limit 5): 0 (how in the world did I get in without research!)
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5): 4 (Non-trad! Did just the big ones.)
I agree with glimglim twice. First, academic enrichment is indeed strange. Their description/example is so specific. Is it unlimited entries? That's a whole lot of enriching to have a separate category on the application for a small group of people. I always suggest people use it more loosely than what is shown if there's something that sort of fits. It's not like they'd reject you for it. I decided to dump sim clinics in there. It was the best place for them on my app. I certainly wasn't going to leave them out (made my interview at MWU almost a simple formality). Second, don't feel the need to use all spaces and sections. I realize that's easier said than done when you lack quality and quantity. It's all still just icing on the cake for schools (with few exceptions). Things are supposedly changing, but it's still all about numbers first and foremost. I don't care whose friend got in with 17 and 2.3 or whatever nonsense is being thrown around.

  • Academic Enrichment Programs: 1
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5): 5, mostly Dean's List though!
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10): 5, only included college era shadowing
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10): 9 (5 clubs w/ leadership, 1 personal, 3 volunteering). Left out all the clubs w/o leadership. Don't think they'll think much of salsa, breakdancing, classical guitar, and art club. 😛
  • Research Experience (limit 5): 2, Research is lov. Research is life.
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5): 2, only included college era jobs

Just curious, what's academic enrichment?
I read the info of ADEA but i haven't understand!!

I didn't include anything that had a piddly little number of hours...My best advice is not to feel like you "have" to fill up all the spaces. 🙂 Quality over quantity.

What do you mean by piddly little number of hours and how do you define quality? Do I need like 100 hrs in each activity or does 20 or 30 suffice? I'm confused as to what to include now.

Many people seem to have a million activities and I don't understand how you guys can have so many and not have done some for fewer hours.

You people with insane EC's are just rockstars and I don't know how you did it.
My EC's are pretty unimpressive in comparison and I still feel like they took a lot of time away from my "glory days" as an undergrad. I'm still working on the section but I have 12 total.
Academic Enrich: 0 (trying to think of something that might count)
Awards: 3 (scholarships/dean's list)
Shadowing: 2 (Also don't have the standard 100 hours like I should :smack:)
Extracurricular: 5 (I'm in more stuff technically but I'm not involved enough in a few things to feel comfortable with putting them down)
Research: 1
Work: 1

No, not 100! 😀 Generally, I wouldn't include anything less than 15 hours. However, it can vary.

For instance... if you volunteered one Saturday at the soup kitchen for 5 hours, that's probably not the best to include.

However, if you're part of an advisory board that meets once a month for 2 hours and you've only been on the board for 6 months, I'd still include it. It is a leadership position, after all, and the idea is that you'll continue to participate (and thus get more hours after you've submitted).

I included one activity that only had ~15 hours, but I indicated that I had been voted to be in a leadership position the upcoming semester.

I guess the best rule of thumb is to NOT put something down you wouldn't feel really comfortable talking about in an interview.

This. Hits it on the nail. Note that 15 hours is just a suggestion. I have dentists that I shadowed for about 10 hours that gave me so much information during that time. I think that's quality.

Oh, yeah! That's perfectly fine for a specialist/dentist you've shadowed. I was really just talking about ECs (clubs, volunteering, and the like). 🙂

  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (3) I'm still deciding if I want to include Dean's List here
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (3) I'm not submitting for another month so I'll probably shadow an additional specialist in that time to bring this up to 4
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (5)
  • Research Experience (1)
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (0)

Ok.......I would please like to know if I'm absolutely screwed...Reading this...I feel screwed..

Academic enrichment(0)
Awards(1) just deans list one time
Shadowing(2)
Extracurricular(2)
Research(0)
Work(2)

....yeah...7 total......

FlossFloss having more activities listed doesn't necessarily translate into a good application. Someone can have everything filled, but have the rest of the application not as great or vice-versa. Don't let other peoples listed activities define your worth.

  • Academic Enrichment Programs: o
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5): 3 (dean's list, president's honor roll, etc)
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10): 3 (shadowing)
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10): 0
  • Research Experience (limit 5): 0
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5): 3 (Military, current job)
Only 9???? Yikes.

I didn't put the dean's list under honors because I thought it would be apparent by my GPA... I should have added it to take up more space. Oh well.

I see a lot/most of you have shadowed more than one dentist. I have only shadowed one dentist since I was in grade 11 and continue to shadow him today. Am I at a disadvantage since I can only fill one slot under dentistry/shadowing experience?

I bet they are really impressive, though!

Not at all, @derbear. Quality over quantity. Is he/she a general dentist? If you have only shadowed a specialist, that would be a problem.
Yup, he is a general dentist. It is awesome though because he does everything from invisilign to root canals.

  • Academic Enrichment Programs: 0
  • Awards, Honors, and Scholarships (limit 5): 5 - scholarships and research poster presentations at various conferences
  • Dentistry/Shadowing Experience (limit 10): 4 - general dentists at community clinics/free clinics
  • Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community Service (limit 10): 10 - A lot of volunteer service and mentoring/leadership programs
  • Research Experience (limit 5): 3 - a lot of research during grad school
  • Work Experience (including Military Service) (limit 5): 5 - two years of AmeriCorps and jobs during and after grad school
I'm a non-traditional student, so I've had time to gain experiences. 🙂
