Hi guys,
I am preparing to apply to both MD and DO schools and have a few questions that I hope you guys can help me with.

1. How many DO and MD schools did you or are you going to apply to?
2. Is it common for people to apply to both? Will either side be offended? Did you tell either side that you applied to the other one too?
3. In AACOMAS, would you have any idea how to list research experience where I received credits during the semesters but got paid during summers?

Thank you so much. It would really be helpful if I can get some answers to these questions.

1. I applied to 2 D.O. schools and 12 M.D. schools.
2. Yes it is common to apply to both, the D.O. side seems to be more interested if you've applied to any M.D. schools than the other way around, and no I didn't tell any schools that I even applied to any other medical school of any type (so far)...if they ask then I'll tell them but I definitely won't be volunteering that information.
3. There's a nice "description box" for that. Also, I imagine you transcripts will reflect that you earned credit in research so they would find out that way.

Thank you for your reply, AdemTD. I'm relieved to hear that it's a common practice to apply to both.

I applied to 7 DO schools and 8 MD schools. It was a tremendous waste of money. Don't be so frugal you don't get in, but be realistic; my nerves got the best of me and I applied, applied, applied.

I applied to 14 DO schools.

I should have applied to 5.

I am applying to 8 MD schools and 7 DO schools. Semicolon, what do you mean you should have only applied to 5?

6 Do, 8 MD

Due to my low stats, I applied to 13 MD and 18 DO schools... do you guys think it was a right move?

Oh wow! I thought this would be like...taboo or something in the medical world, but I was just thinking of the same thing today and plan to apply to both.

I have already applied to 10 MDs but now I'm starting to think I should go towards the DO route, and maybe I'll go 5-7 for that.

I have two questions for everyone that has applied to both (sorry Kneige I'm here asking a question too).

1. When I requested my letters of recs, I told my professors/supervisors I was going for medical school but did not specify MD or OD. AdemTD said the DO side would be little more ok to know we applied to both, so if they received the same letters of recs as the MDs, it should be ok as long as they did not specifically state "medical school"?

2. Are the AMCAS and AACOMAS similar where I enter the basic info, list my schools, upload essay etc. without anything extrememly different?

Good luck to everyone!

to answer question 2, they are basically the exact same except AACOMAS doesnt allow you as many characters as AMCAS does for your personal statement and your work/extracurricular activities so you might have to trim some of your responses down to compensate.

In hindsight, I applied to too many schools since I didn't expect to do as well as I did. I ended up skipping a few secondaries and withdrawing from most schools anyway...

1. I hope you understand that DO schools = medical schools just as much as MD schools are. So if your LOR said "medical school"...it'd still be accurate. It sounds like you should research the profession a little more as such remarks could be construed as offensive.

2. The two application services are more similar than they are different.

+1

I applied to waaaaaay too many schools.

Thanks to all you guys who replied. I have a rough idea of what people are doing now!

To btam2- That's okay =) I'm glad the thread I started is helping people. Many DO schools need an LOR from a DO so you'll have to shadow one. But you still have some time to do that since the deadlines are later than MD schools. Yeah, do some research on DO schools before you apply! Good luck to you too!

I applied to 15 DO and 23 MD...you can look at my mdprofile if interested

So far I have done 3 DO and 25 MD. I would apply to more DO but the MD Schools are cheaper only $31 per school but the DO the first school is $155. and you have to get above 10 to get to the $30 per school level. I got fee waivers for both MD and DO.

You know that for the MDs the first school is also like $150 or something.

Don't ever say that DO is not a "medical school". MD and DO are both medical schools. If you say that DO is not a medical school during a DO interview you can simply walk out the door because they will (or should) reject you. As Semicolon said, you really should read up on what osteopathic medicine. Make sure you can answer "what do you know about osteopathic medicine" if asked during an interview.

So far I've applied to 4 DO and 2 MD. I'm waiting on my MCAT scores (tomorrow, oh the anticipation) before I apply to a few more. I'd like to see exactly where I stand so I can choose schools I have a good chance at.

I applied today to 16 DO and 4 MD, but I think I applied to too many DO's I couldnt narrow down the list at all

I also applied to way too many schools. It would have been enough to apply to 6 or 7 DO schools.

Initially: 5 D.O. 3 M.D.
withdrew: 2 D.O. and 1 M.D. pre-secondary (decided that I didn't want to attend)

One DO School (which I ranked first for the Texas match and is where I will be attending)
Four MD schools (two of which I interviewed at but ranked lower than the DO school)

All in Texas

thats pricey 😱 i have about your stats, and i applied to 15 total

i received fee waivers, so both primary applications only cost me around $600. However, after reading some of posters i'm really having second thoughts :scared:

For anyone else in this situation, who hasn't submitted yet: Take a look at the CIB, and look at the rate of OOS acceptances. This shaved 4 or 5 schools off my list. Too bad too, PNU looked nice.

I'm applying next year and currently thinking about 6 MD schools and 6 DO schools...maybe about 10-12 total schools...it will all depend on my MCAT score and final gpa....god help me

Always cast a wide net.

Applied to 14 DO schools, 0 MD. I received all secondaries and only sent in 10. Got in to 2 and then withdrew from 7.

In retrospect, a lot of money was wasted, but what can you do!

in the end, going in debt is part of the path to becoming a doctor and this starts with applications, then tuition, then graduation....eventually everyone gets rid of it....so apply away and hopefully you will get into one🙂

I've applied to 8 DO schools and 7 MD schools, all of my MD schools and one of the DO schools are in Texas (there are ten total Texas medical schools, I didn't apply to the one in El Paso).

I am a re-applicant and my first year I applied to four DO schools, my second year I only applied to the one DO school that wait listed me, and this year I'm sort of going for a hail Mary and applying to as many schools as I can afford, and any schools for which I am an in-state student, or that don't give a preference either way.

Still, it may be wise for some to use a shovel instead of an excavator when digging their financial hole.

I applied to about 15 MD schools and 6-7 DO schools. I will be taking the MCAT in ~ two weeks and hopefully my chances of an acceptance increase. Feel free to comment on my mdapp with some criticism or motivation, I really need it :scared:.

Ive heard that NOVA rejects you if you apply to MD schools. Just a rumor.

A false rumor. Mosspoh on here was accepted to NOVA and then is now attending a MD program (he got of the waitlist to the MD program).

BUMP for more replies since 2009, please. If possible and you don't mind, please share how many of those applied you were accepted to and how many you were waitlisted at. Thank you!

Doing as many as I can afford...25 MD and 7 DO. My stats are 3.66/3.43/35/below average ECs

20 MD, 6 DO in 2 cycles.
Wasted money, I should have been smarter about the process and applied earlier the first cycle.
