How many ENT slots are there each year? I was looking at the nrmp page and it lists only 35 or so slots per year. that seems pretty low. is there a transitional year required or is it just 4 years? (i.e. opthal is 1+3).

I just matched into ENT this year. ENT is early match and uses the San Francisco Matching Program (www.sfmatch.org). This year the ENT match more competitive than the last 4 years with a 76% match rate for US Seniors. There were 256 spots offered, 426 applications, and 359 rank lists submitted. The average Step 1 score for those who matched was 237. It is my guess that with the 80 hour work regulations ENT will continue to be very competitive. My advice is besides doing well and having great scores is getting involved with your schools department early (i.e. doing ENT related research). Good luck - my biased opinion is that ENT is the best surgical subspecialty because it has a large breadth of sub-subspecialties to choose from, if desired can provide a great lifestyle, and attracts cool down to earth folks.

sorry, I didn't answer one of your questions - ENT training is usually 4+1 meaning that the intern year or PGY-1 year is ususally a general surgery prelim year followed by 4 years of ENT training. Most programs gaurantee you a spot automatically so you don't have to apply for prelim spots. I think there are a couple of exceptions though. I'm not sure what the spots are on the NRMP site but check out sfmatch.org for more info.
