How many hours a day are you in class?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What does your class schedule look like? Are you at school, in class, from 8 to 5 minus lunch? If you are 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year how do those years differ? Please state the school you are attending. Thanks!

At IUSD:

D1 & D2: Class 8am-5pm. usually 2-5 hours study each night. Sometimes we get ILA (independent Learning Activities) which is a fancy way to say sleep in time. As a D1 every tuesday starting next week (THANK THE LORD) we have ILA till 1 pm.

D3&D4: Required clinic attendance is 78% I think and you are responsible for scheduling your own patients (which isnt a problem because there are a LOT to choose from!). So if you want every friday off, you can just not schedule patients those days. Typically, it is a 2 patient per day gig plus emergencies if needed.

First semester D1 is hell. All of D2 is worse.

Hope that helps

Hey, so is it safe to assume D1 and 2 are probably the hardest time-wise? Thanks.

Yes, most likely.

U.Kentucky

I'm a D-1

usually 8-5pm (12 pm lunch break) for M-F

(I do envy our 1st yr med students schedule of 8-12pm)

Stony Brook

1st year lots of medical classes and you can skip at least 80% of them. If you DO go to class all the time expect to be there about 930 - 5 with 1.5 hours of lunch in the fall and about 8 or 9 to anywhere from 3-5pm in the spring. There are a couple days with dental classes which are mandatory.

2nd year expect 8 - 5 with an hour off every day except Wednesday and Thursday. On Wed you have med class in the AM which you can usually skip. On Thurs you get some clinical rotations and you will usually have either the AM or the PM session off (only one at a time, but sometimes you don't get either off if you get stuck with a rotation in both sessions).

3rd year has 8-5 every day. There's clinic every session except no clinic on Weds, just class. Eventually there's a class on Wed morning you can skip and eventually after that there stops being class on Wed altogether.

4th year has clinic 9-1 and 2-5 every day except Thurs which is only 2-5 and sometimes class in the AM. There's a class 8-9am most of the time but not always.

And don't forget lab work during 3rd and 4th year.

UoP (Im only a first year but this is what I have gathered so far)

First Year: 8-5 Monday - Thursday and 9-1 on Fridays. The half days on Friday eventually go away after a couple of quarters.

Second year: 8-5 Everyday and some night clinic till 9:30 on Mon and thurs

Third Year: 9-5 and night clinic Mon and Thurs

Yeah first year schedule is hellish and we are only half way through the first quarter. yeah but this is the most bad***** school around so what do you expect?😀

Night clinic? Every week mon and thur? That must be tough for students with kids.

I'm told that next semester is more like 8-5 everyday but here is a more detailed breakdown of this first semester.

W - 9-12 then throughout semester the afternoon used for meetings and lab practicals
R - 9-2 then occlusion lab 2-5

Spring semester 8-5 M-F

Hi I am a Student of Karnavati School of Dentistry and we have 9 a.m to 3 p.m classes regular intervals. So having really good time..

DS1 at OU

8am to 5pm- M, W
8am to 3pm- T
8am to 4pm- Th
8am to 1pm- F

Since our science courses are directed by professors outside of the dental school, attendance is not usually required. To save some time throughout the day, a lot of classmates choose to study these classes in the library during that time or double time the lecture later and get ahead in another class.

I 100% agree with you! I stopped going to classes half-way through my 2nd quarter of 1st year and never went back. You have to be very disciplined to stay on top of things though. I wouldn't reccomend to everyone...
Dental school classes are worthless, just memorize the powerpoints and that is it...

Question:

For you D1 and D2 folks out there.... So you go to class from 8am to 5pm (for most of you).... that means you COVER a crap load of information basically every week.... How does this work out exam wise? do you have an exam every week basically cause you cover SOOO MUCH material in just 1 week?

Also, Do most of your D1 and D2 classes have cumulative finals? Man, I've seen how much material you folks go through, how would you be able to study for a cumulative final? thats like 1000+ pages for each test lol

It depends on the school. Some schools have exam blocks, basically every few weeks or month you have a week of exams. At other schools, like mine, you have an exam every week. There is a ****load of material to cover, but if you keep up with the material and study every day, it's doable. I am typically in class 8-5 and then I come home and study for 2-3 hours, just looking over notes from the day. Weekends are the days I really cram and usually spend 8 or so hours in the library on both saturday and sunday.

None of the finals at my school are cumulative, in the sense that you won't see stuff on the last exam that were covered on the first exam. However, some concepts build upon each other so you do need a good foundation.

okay that sounds more reasonable atleast (the thing u said about block exams or non-cumulative finals)..... I am sure you understand my reason for asking.... 2 months in dental school is probably equivalent to 2 years of undergrad lol, a cumulative final is just.... I can't even imagine how you would study for that kind of exam in a matter of 1 week or whatever they give you.

but then again, thats what NBDE 1 is right..... just a cumulative final of all the basic sciences taught in first year

At UMDNJ we have one or two exams every week... I think there is a week that we have three exams. To give you an idea... In one histology lecture (2 hours) we covered 200+ slides. These slides aren't like a few words either, there is mechanisms, pathways, pictures etc etc. So we have histology 3 times a week which translates to 6 hours of histo a week which translates to about 600 slides per week. Exams are every four weeks in histo so on one exam you have 2,400 slides to cover.:laugh::laugh: I wish I was kidding. Not to mention we have physiology 4 times a week at two hours a pop and in that class there is an exam every two weeks which covers some dense stuff too. Plus anatomy, intro to dentistry, preventative dentistry and clinical rotations.

To be honest though, once you get into it it's just like running a marathon... I still find time to watch an episode of dexter a night so im happy.

It really depends on the school. Most of my finals are cumulative which isn't going to be very fun, but it keeps you motivated. It is extremely important to stay on top of material and not get too far behind.

OU has exams or quizzes pretty much every week for the first year. In the next two weeks we have 7 exams and 3 quizzes, which I should probably be studying for. However, this schedule is pretty cyclical. We'll go through two weeks that are heavy on exams and then a few weeks with just an exam and two quizzes a week. It sounds like a lot compared to undergrad, but, as others have said, it is completely doable.
