How many hours a week do you work at your retail pharmacy?

I'm trying to get my head in the door, but places like Wal-greens define part time as 30 hours a week 😱 and I'm also getting paid to do research at my school lab, which is another 30 hours.

I work 8 hours a week. Kaiser has short hour positions (under 20 hrs a week). However, for my first 90 days I had to work up to 32 hours a week for training purposes.

That's interesting - I've been working for CVS for almost 6 years, and my base is 30 hours per week - that is considered full time for benefits purposes. I think it really depends on your store. Right now my store has people working schedules ranging from 4 to 40 hours per week. I am taking part of the summer "off" before pharmacy school starts in the fall, and I will be working 8 hours at my store and 4 hours at another CVS then. So, it just depends on what the needs of the store are. Now, I have to say that if you don't have tech experience previously, it will be more difficult to pick up on your job tasks if you aren't working a fair amount of hours per week.

This is a great point. When I switched pharmacies I began only working about 15hrs/week and it took a lot longer to catch on. I recommend working more in the beginning and then cutting back if thats an option.

I work for Walgreen's and 30 hours per week is considered full time, anything less is part time.

I work at CVS, and I get 40 hours a week when I'm not away at college.

How much you work depends on your store, how many techs you have employed, what kind of volume the store deals with, and the person in charge of scheduling. I'm lucky enough to have a store that does 700+ scripts per day, a good scheduling person, and sufficient techs. Therefore, I can pretty much decide how many hours per week I want to work.

While I'm away at college, I work once every 6 weeks to stay on payroll. We have people that only work on certain weeks, and other people work less than 15 hours per week. So, everything just depends on circumstances. If you look for a job in a pharmacy, just talk to them and explain your situation along with what you're looking for. In my experience people are understanding.

However, if you're looking for a tech position, CVS might be harder to get into now. I'm in South Carolina, and CVS is evidently now requiring that for ever 3 techs working, 2 have to be state certified (different than state registered). Which means you have to have worked so many hours, passed your PTCB exam, and taken what is evidently a year's worth of classes in order to be state certified. So right now, the CVS's in my area are only hiring state certified people.

Hope that helps!
