Just curious how many credit hours most of us non-trads average before getting accepted.

I'll have around 40 hours once all is said and done.

60-ish. Although I'm looking to do an MD/PhD, so I took more classes than most folks would.

what was your first degree and how old are you, if you don't mind me asking?

i have also thought about the MD/PhD, but sometimes i feel like it'll be tough path especially after switching from an alternate career

39-hour masters degree

32-hours of pre-reqs

18 hours of undergraduate retakes

so...89 hours total

I'll be 32 when I enter med-school :xf:

48 credits in postbacc, and I started from scratch (no prior science classes).

First degree? Let's see; Ronald Reagan was still president ...

Graduating this semester with my 2nd BS in Biochem. (1st was in Marketing).

All said and done, 88 hours post bac, for a grand total of 302 hours and 8 years! 😱 (I enjoyed the 1st degree too much.)

"Lots of people go to school for that long," "Yeah, they're called doctors!"

I'm 28. I'll be 30 when I matriculate (hopefully!). First degree was actually two degrees, a finance and an econ degree.

The MD/PhD does take more time, but if you really like both the science and the medicine it's a great choice.

I'll have, like I said, around 40 hours post bacc. That will be at the end of this summer, after I finish organic 2. I'll probably keep taking classes in the fall and spring of next year in case I'm not accepted. I want to have something good to add to my app if the need to reapply arises. I hope it doesnt, though!:luck:

I feel you on the length of being in undergrad. I've been in school pretty much straight for the past 9 years, doing one thing or another. I'll be 28 when I matriculate, hopefully.

over 40 hrs postbacc for me, starting almost totally from scratch on the science front.

40 hrs, with a couple of humanities courses taken out of personal interest.

I had done about 40 hours in prereqs before I was accepted (I had not taken any sciences during my undergrad).

30 hours, all science, mostly upper level, except physics 2 and organic chem 2

I will be 31 when I matriculate this fall...

First degree was in Social Work 😉

How are you all paying for the courses? Please share how you are going about this as I will be starting this fall with postbacc work.

I'm going to retake my science classes (the ones with Cs) and get a B.S. degree in clinical research administration. I took a CNA position, 3rd shift, so I can go to school during the day. I will get paid 12.30 an hour with state benefits.

The new degree will be 28 credits (one class already took and electives already done, obviously with having a B.S. degree in biology already) and I'm looking at retaking about 20 credits of science classes (dang 4 credit courses).

I will take the MCAT during this process and applying to DO schools. The schools that I've talked to already said as long as I get around a 32 MCAT (which I said was my goal) and retake a few of the Cs and I should get in at a DO school as I have some very strong ECs and work experience.

I did 36 credits, several were retakes from undergrad since one or two med schools felt my grades had expired after 5 years out of school. Finished undergrad in 1998, will be 31 when I start.

I paid out of pocket b/c I didn't qualify for federal loans. I was also working full-time.

Paid for my classes out of pocket, I'd researched the 4 year schools in my area and took classes at the cheapest one, around $1700 per semester + books for a fulltime class load.

32's a great goal for the MCAT, a great deal of work will most likely be involved in earning it -- I'd suggest 2 months or so fulltime study after completing all pre-requs; at least that's what it took for me to earn low-30s MCAT w/ 3.9+ GPA on all prerequs. (3.7+ overall GPA)

Out of pocket for me as well at a local state school. I work 2 shifts a week as a RN which is goes a long way to help with tuition.

I had left my work with a good amount in saving. I asked my parents if I could live with them, so I could save more cash. I went to school full time for the academic year and did 12 hour night shifts as a caregiver Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This completed my year of introductory Bio, inorganic chem, and physics, as well as a genetics class. In the summer I continued working as a caregiver, and took 8 credits of organic chem to finish that requirement.

Since all of the classes were fresh in my mind, I didn't need to study much for the MCAT relative to other people I know who were taking it at the same time.

The following fall I took a lighter load, wrapping up my labs and some Biochem. I worked as a tutor since the night shifts wreaked havoc on my sleep patterns. I was accepted later in the year.

I didn't qualify for any financial aid at the University I was at since I already had a degree. I applied for a pre-approved loan, and I was not approved. By last fall, my savings were about drained. So, I have a good amount of credit card debt right now that I am trying to work down... but I'm happy because I am going to be a doctor. Any besides, the debt I have now is just a drop in the bucket compared to how much I will have in 4 years 🙂

I have to take 90 before matriculation, as I am applying under the Texas Academic Fresh Start statute which means that the existing 200+ hours of credit I have from my BA and JD cannot be counted toward the 90-hour matriculation requirement. 😱 (It is worth it, though, because this also means that my 200+ hours of 3.2 GPA is not figured into my cumulative GPA. 👍 )

I just found out last week that I was awarded a Presidential Scholarship for the next two years, so all tuition and books will be paid. Very thankful. 🙂

I am almost 34 and will be 36 when I (hopefully) matriculate.

ETA that I am taking 60 before applying and the remaining 30 during the gap year.

I'm doing my first 8 hours of classes this term. Pre-med requirements only.

I'll take 4-8 over summer. (Chem 2 Bio 2)

8-12 Fall (Ochem 1, Phys 1, maybe Stats)

8-12 Spring. (Ochem 2 Phys 2, maybe Human Morph)

MCAT May 2010

Apply June 2010.

Take some Biochem/MicroB during app cycle and update with scores.

I took 40 credits exactly. This was enough. I know this because my nearly 3 year journey through post bac and 2 app cycles finally just ended in an acceptance to an allopathic school.
