I found one thread about this, but I was interested in getting results for a poll. So, all interested parties! How many hours do you work per week? Why that many hours (i.e. do you pay for your own tuition and housing? Are you saving for medical school? Are you cutting back because you need to study now?)?

I'll start: I work between 25-30 hours per week right now and I'm looking for another job so I can save some money after paying my bills.

My stupid job only schedules me for Saturdays, so I only work 5 hours/week. If it was up to me, I'd like to work about 16; 8 on Sat., 8 on Sun.

Right now I'm going to school solely on financial aid, and I pay the small difference on my own. I'll also be paying the loans back completely on my own, hopefully with my miserable resident paycheck 😀

Holy crap, who voted that they work 41+ hours?? I envy you if you are able to work that much and maintain a good GPA.

There are a lot of things that you can work from home through the internet and phone calls. That would save a lot of time commuting.

I usually work about 15 hours per week during the school year and most summers I work around 60 hours per week (except for this summer).

I do it b/c we don't have money and I hate mooching off of my mom.

5-20 hours per week through out undergrad.
Did it for food/fun/beer money (started working more after turning 21 for that reason) -- it also was work-study money that I didn't want to go to waste. I have expensive beer tastes that my parents hate funding -- they are bud light people, I am 8+ ABV people (going to Cleveland's Great Lakes Brewery tonight to try Quitter Ale in honor of Lebron James, haha)

Since grad, I work 6-10 hours a week as a TA. Don't see any of the money though... but it does cover my tuition costs.

edit: All my undergrad tution/housing was covered in loans (or financial aid grant money) that I will eventually pay back... one day

I would work about 10-12 hrs per week during school at my lab job and then between 32-50 hrs per week during the summer and winter breaks at a movie theater. How much I worked at the movies depended on how poor I was and if I wanted to take vacations or not.

I work 45-50 hours per week (for summer only) because I need the money to pay for my medical school application fees (primary, secondary, interview as well if I can get any, lol).

I will be working 10-15 hours per week after school starts.

My parents paid about 70% of my tuition (I paid the rest of 30%, textbooks, transportation, etc. ) and I am thinking about paying for the last year of undergrad by myself.

While I was in school, I worked 10 hours a week (sometimes less, because if they didn't have enough work for me to do, they'd send me home.

Since graduation, I work at least 40 hours a week. Currently, it works out to 84 hours per pay period, since I work 12 hour shifts.

I am about to enter my freshman for college and I have been working as a deli/stock at a grocery store for a year and a half. Around 15-20 hours a week. Now I am trying to decide what I want to do now.
I will be commuting 30 mins to my undergrad and I want to leave free time for studying, extracurriculurs, etc. I talked to my manager and he said they are really flexible and I can work 5-10 hours a week if needed.
Should I take a break from work to get acclimated to college?
Also should I consider leaving the job to find a job more science/medical oriented (research i.e)?

I still think that working is worth it though...I feel more independent knowing I am paying for my own college and car and not mooching off of someone or loans.

60-65... sometimes I'm lucky to work a little less and other times I work a bit more. Hopefully I'll be able to change this soon, but it's not too bad. I do it because this is the line of work I've been doing for the past eight years and I am hoping to save up enough to not work so much 🙂

This is the same problem I am having. I am only able to volunteer 4 hours a week and can't fit in any research at all right now.

I think 10 hours a week is doable for sure, however you won't really know for sure until you are a ways in and see how you do. Maybe just ask if you can work on one of the weekend days or something and go from there.
