Hey gang, just wondering if you know anyone with more than 3 interviews from previous cycles and never got an acceptance. Is it fairly common to not accepted, even off the waitlist, from any of the schools you've interviewed at? I would understand one interview, maybe two, but three or more? any thoughts?

I would imagine that if you have 3 interviews and you applied really early you will get an acceptance....I think that's the national ration. 3 interviews: 1 acceptance. But of course that different when you applied...June versus September.

I have 7 interviews so far...hopefully, i get accepted to one of them! Oh boy I am so :scared: :scared: :scared:

i had 5 interviews in a previous cycle (not last year). they were all later (late january to late march) in the cycle because i submitted pretty late. whether i was only interviewing for the waitlist or i did not perform very well in the actual interviews, i got waitlisted to all 5 only to slowly get rejected one by one over the summer.

not trying to burst anyone's bubble. i do think that the lateness played a role though, so a few earlier interviews can be a very different scenario, what with rolling admissions and all. moral of the story: early is better.

if they are late feb or march interviews they are for waitlist spots..

I applied early. 3 deferrals/waitlists and 1 rejection on October 15th.

In the last few years, there have been a fair number of people on SDN with three interviews and no acceptances, even off the waitlists in the summer, if they were lucky enough to have been waitlisted in the first place. And no, they weren't mainly late applicants. There were substantially fewer like this that had had 4 interviews, but still some. Those with 5+ interviews not getting acceptances were rare, but still existed. One of many reasons you can't generalize is that some state schools have automatic interview invites via a formula that may translate to lopsided candidates (low GPA + high MCAT); those people are granted interviews, but are less likely to get in...plus of course there's poor interview skills and just plain bad luck. Additionally, some schools like Drexel and NYMC interview way more than they are taking, and if all your interviews are to that type of school, your odds are much lower. On the other hand, if your interviews are to Creighton and MCW type schools, you are probably getting in with 3 interviews if you don't really blow the interview. Everyone desperately wants to turn this process into something reasonable, rational, and predictable, but it's not!😱

good post!

Yeh, but what about not getting many interviews even? I have only one and it has resulted in a waitlist. I was complete by the end of August at most schools and now i'm starting to worry.

NYMC accepted 53% of the applicants that they interviewed last year
Drexel accepted 56% of the applicants and Creighton also accepted 53% of the applicants.

I know AECOM only accepted 38% of the applicants they interviewed last year-that's pretty low...

It seems like the majority of schools accept ~50% of their interviewees.

yes thats true. if you look at instate versus OOS stats, it's even higher than 50% for instaters...some schools are close to 80-90%.

Sounds reasonable, although I suspect that the breakdown is different for in-state versus OOS applicants for many schools.

I believe GW accepted closer to 30% of the applicants it interviewed.

for the 50% number, keep in mind the amount of kids that get waitlisted and end up withdrawing because of acceptances elsewhere. that will count as part of the other 50% that do NOT get accepted so that's a plus!

morriske, you have no idea how much better than makes me feel. thanks! where'd you get that info?

I've done quite a bit of analysis on this subject because I'm OOS at my top choice schools 🙁 It seems that when you are OOS the big "hurdle" is getting the interview. Once you have the interview the acceptance rate is similar IS and OOS. I'm sure there are exceptions.

Have I mentioned how productive I am at work these days

GW had a 4.6% acceptance rate for 2005 according to US News with about 10,000 applications. And they cut off their interviews at 1000. so it looks like they accepted 46% of the applicants that they interviewed....or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part.

sonyvaio, you have revealed my sources

so USNWR's data is for 2005? Good to know. Considering you have so many interviews, I think you are not in poopsivilland anymore 🙂

I PMed sweetserenade

well, also keep in mind, a lot of the medical schools accept about twice the size of their desired class size. so after all the declining, they will still end up with the right number of students. so, now, double the chance of acceptance at your interview, please.
Edit: yeah, im quite optimistic as you can see.

that doesn't make any sense. that means they only had 7783 applications. something's weird with those numbers. (not challenging you, just the numbers that US News supplied)

maybe 10,000 is total primaries while 7783 is total secondaries actually submitted

Yes, 2005 data, it says so on the top of the charts. An acceptance is the only anchor that can pull me out of this s.hit know as "medical school application process"....

yap, some ppl dont submit the secondary. happens often after ppl bomb the aug mcat...

I feel your pain. I think I will be waiting until late November to hear from the school I interviewed at last week. I wish I could go back and re-do the interview 🙁

Hey Robizzle, since EVMS interviews about 500 hundred people for a class of about 110, it means that there should be about 200-250 acceptances after all is said and done I would think. (maybe 100 straight out acceptance, and 150 from the waitlist?) Thats like 38% of the waitlist then (assuming a waitlist of 400). 👍

What I thought... Is that they over-accept. So for example for a class of 110, they probably give acceptances to 210 ppl. and 46 will come off waiting list...

yeah.. and u gotta keep in mind all of those on the waitlist that get accepted to UVA and VCU and other places and withdraw or don't give a crap and don't send update letters or letters of interest. i bet that's a much larger percentage then we think. so i think we'll be okay 🙂 🙂

You could be right. So would that mean that the initial 200 or so acceptances are straight out acceptances, and only after withdrawls from most of them do they switch to the waitlist? Not quite as appealing. Ah well. 46 is still a lot of waitlist people though.

I like your attitude Robizzle! Keep it coming 👍 This is so up and down. But You may be right, perhaps a number of waitlisters will get accepted elsewhere. 300-400 waitlisters minus those that go elsewhere, minus those that do not follow up, minus those that were just poor at being interviewed, and we may stand a better chance! 😀

Other schools might be different. I know vandy over accepts 300 ppl for 100 seat approximately. and ONLY 10 ppl come of the waitlist...some might use the waitlist more than others. vandy is a top 20 school, so obviously, not a lot of ppl turn them down (especially instate).

so far I have gone to 12 interviews invited to 14 but still not acceptance...no rejection or waitlist either...just waiting to hear from any of them for an acceptance...I feel that all of my interviews went well...everyone of them said that they really want me there next year...but I am not sure if them say this to all interviewees

word. I'm in a similar boat----a lot of interviews, no responses yet and not expecting any until mid-november at the earliest according to the adcoms at each school's prediction during my interview---

Oh, I am a champion at this!

Four interviews, three waitlists, and the fourth will certainly be a waitlist as well.

To be honest, I'm not worried. My mom is becoming sad, though. I hate that.

seriously, if my mom didn't worry at all i wouldn't worry either lol. i'd just apply again next year...

Where on the U.S. News site are you guys finding these stats? Do you need a premium membership? I'm interested in the four SUNY schools if you wouldn't mind posting those statistics.

Wow, thank you so much! Sending good application karma your way :luck:

i had 3 interviews before december, and 1 in april. I was waitlisted at 4 schools (bombed first interview!!!), and was not taken off of any of those waitlists. un-luck of the draw, i guess...
