How many of you premeds go....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I went to two small private Christian colleges in AR and OK.

I went to a pretty small university (approximately the same size as many liberal arts colleges)

To small private colleges. I was just wondering cauz I will be starting this fall at a small private college in PA.

Cheers!

Where at?

My school had about 2000... i liked having a small school, where else are you going to get classes with 2 people in it? I had almost 10 classes like that

have you had a class where you are the only one?? now thats pretty boring lol.

Thank you guys for the reply cauz I will be attending York College in PA and was wondering if it was gonna limit my chances of getting into a good medical school.

P.S I am an international student!!

I go to a small private college in NJ. 1600 undergrads...after 4 years, too small!!

I steered clear of that route but many of my friends had 1 person lectures (it was necessary for people who needed a course to graduate)

Right now i have a friend who is taking an advanced chem lab by himself, which really sucks. Whenever you're flying solo (lecture or lab) the teacher demands 10x from you lol

york is a good school... youll be fine as far as med schools are concerned

Thank you xanthomondo !!
That really was at the back of my mind

I also want to know if international students are allowed to volunteer, research and shadow?
Thank you

I go to a small/medium-sized private school in PA.

If you don't mind me asking, in what part of PA will you be?

I will be going to York College (somewhere in south central Pennsylvania)

Hey if u don't mind me asking, which school u go to?
Are there good research opportunities available at small schools?

Ive managed to find a few, but I think in generaly there are probably a lot less opportunites than at the big schools.

I think the research opportunities are great at small schools. Sure you wont be doing cutting edge research on cancer most likely, but you'll probably have your own little research project and wont just be washing dishes for a bunch of ungrateful grad students.

this is true

Great! Now I'm happy that I will be going to a small school. 😀

except for the fact that the number of girls to choose from is much less, and if you mess up with one she probably knows 50% of the campus so you are screwed, lol.

i go to a small liberal arts college.......... ~ 1800 students

in response to a previous poster...i cant speak for every small school b/c obviousy it will differe but the research opportunities at my college are amaaaaazing. i am upset i have not been able to take complete advantage of them. that being said, i applied for a research grant to work with a professor over summer and i hear back this week!!! only 40 of the 97 applicants were accepted, so i have my fingers crossed 🙂

if anyone has any questions about my experiences and my thoughts about small colleges, i'd be more than happy to share! just PM me!

p.s. i have a course this semester called Diet, Disease and Exercise. there are only 6 people enrolled. it is simply amazing, for many reasons. PM me as well for details.

Johns Hopkins is a small private college.

I go to a small private Christian school of around 30,000. Does that count?

I go to a school with 60,000 students does that count?

yeah and if you have a girlfriend all of the other girls on campus know 🙁

amwatts i miss your old avatar already lol

do you guys get to skip class without losing attendance points at those small colleges?

Pretty sure this is on a school by school basis, or certain professors policy.
Mine don't take attendance, but if a large portion of the class is missing there always seems to be a ridiculously easy POP-Quiz.😴👍

~1,100 at my school. Most of my classes were 15-25 people. Never heard of a one person class.

There was a day when the professor led my whole Humanities class to the dorm next door to bring chicken noodle soup to a student who missed class. Turns out he was playing Madden...

Haha yeah teachers sometimes would call and bug you if you stayed in your dorm and skipped their class.

Our school had a rule that if you missed twice the number of classes that it meets in a week (so if you have 3 one hour classes a week you could miss up to 6) you automatically failed.

The only time the teachers stressed this rule was if they didnt like you.

My highschool had almost 4k students...

I actually go to a small public college, which seems to be kind of anamoly. It's kind of nice though, because there's only a little over 1,800 students, but its not much more expensive than bigger public universities.

And professors totally notice when you're not in class. It's a good way to make sure that you actually go, but sometimes its a huge inconvenience because you feel guilted into going to class.

I went to a small college in PA too, in Lancaster, which is like 30min away from York😀 Of the 1800, about 60 were bio majors my year and I ended up having class after class with the same people, I had nicknames for most of them, lol.

Enjoy it while you are there, small colleges definately have their advantages which I didn't appreciate enough during my undergrad but now that I'm doing a post-bacc at a large public university, the atomsphere is definately different and I miss the small college atmosphere sometimes. Small classes (most were capped at 24), regular office hours, how close everything was, etc. Maybe everything except the professor noticing when you weren't at lecture😳 (I don't go to lecture now unless I absolutely have to, ie have to turn something in. I've found that I do better going over the posted notes instead of wasting my time franctically trying to copy stuff down without thinking about the material).

As far as research oppurtunities go, personally I do feel that you have less oppurtunities at smaller colleges just due to the number of faculty there. My undergrad, there were about 6 professors total in the bio department
and about 140 students in the major, you had to be extremely persistent and good to do research. Whereas at my postbacc school, which has a graduate school and a medical school, pretty much anyone can find a biology related research oppurtunity. Not that I think it's a major disadvantage, there is always the option of doing research in the summer somewhere else (like at Hershey for example) or after you graduate if absolutely necessary.

I'd say I was there or driving through it once a month or so.

Hate to say this but not really, it wouldn't be my first choice.

I guess if you like the countryside and farms, it's ok.

The biggest problem is that it is hard to get anywhere without a car, there isn't much going on compared to bigger cities or university towns, and it's kind of dirty. But it is centrally located, 2hrs to DC, 1.5 to Philly, 4 to Atlantic city, 3 to NYC, 6 to boston.

Thank you for the info.
What really appeals to me is that there is a really good hospital (York Hospital USNews top 100) right next to the college, so it would be great for volunteering, research and shadowing.

From small, private, Christian, liberal arts college in Mississippi here. About 2000 students, very strong in the sciences.
