I'm not talking about people with amazing stellar step scores that will be obvious matches but rather people that will have to work it to match. What are some typical numbers? Do people exclude certain geographic areas or w a specialty as competitive as rads, do you just apply everywhere?

Aunt Minnie has a general rule thread based on step score. I tend to not buy it. I applied everywhere as an average to below average applicant, to about 80 programs.

even a lot of the top applicants will apply to too many programs. it makes it really difficult for some of these programs when it comes to figuring out who to give interviews to...

how much is each application typically?

depends on your step score, grades, and REGION (do not forget about region). generally speaking (and this is general), midwest or south is probably the easiest followed by east coast and then west coast is really tough.

i applied to 30 for what its worth.

Applied to a little over 100. And I second the regional comments.

The truthful but not really helpful answer? Too many.

Here's my profile since I really don't have any reason to hide it.

My strategy was to only apply to places that I would legitimately consider.

I had never heard of Match Applicants.com until I saw your profile. Can you suggest ways I would use this as an MS4 getting ready to apply for residency?

You can search profiles that others have put up and/or look at individual programs to see profiles of applicants who got interviews at certain places.

The anecdotal rule of thumb is to subtract 5-10 points from the averages you see as the profiles tend to represent more of the baller portion of the applicant pool.

Good luck!

Exactly. It's great for anecdotal evidence, but the sample size is far too small for you to place too much credence on it.

The avg M4 applied to just over 50 Rads programs. Then you take into account CV, Region applying to, etc. In the end it doesn't hurt to apply to more and just decline interview invites once you have a feel for it. That's what I did & I ended up declining a couple invites once I had a good number of invitations.

I think that's a fair strategy. Just make sure you decline them as early as possible (>1-2 weeks prior to the date) to give the folks on the waiting lists a chance to make travel arrangements.

We have seen guidance on how many radiology programs to apply to. How about TY and prelims?
Thanks.
