i'm applying to 34. i have heard many tell me it is way too many, and many tell me it is perfect. so i am selectively listening to the "perfect" comments.

I applied to 20, and got interviews at 10. Your goal should be to get ~10-12 interviews, so how many depends on the mix of programs you have and your sats.
