How many programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why not apply to all the programs (within reason) you would consider for residency. Then, you will see how many interviews you get and can decide how many interviews you want to go on as the interview season trecks on. Good luck.

wouldn't it depend on how well you did, and where you want to end up...for example, if you have a 250 on your steps, are AOA, and other nice "perks" in your application, i would focus in on applying to only the "top" programs"...why waste $ on programs that you know you'll either not go to their interview or have no interest in....on the other hand, if you are "borderline," then apply to as many as you can and see where it gets you...

also, it depends on what you wanna do....do you wanna do a fellowship...if yes, then what are you leaning towards?...something like GI, cards, and allergy are very tough, while pulmo/renal/heme-onc/ID aren't as tough...i was checking out the IM forum here and one of the Cards threads stated that a person can have 2 options: 1) go to a prestigious program and lock your self up for a nice fellowship ANYWHERE you wanna go (obviously, you have to do well, etc. etc.), or 2) go to a place where you have a better chance of getting a fellowship WITHIN that program....if you did really well on your steps, go to a top notch residency so you'll have a higher chance of getting a "prestigious" fellowship....from the consensus, it seemed like people were favoring to go to a better rep program than a program that you have an "inside" trach on....check it out for yourself...

lastly, (and I MAY be wrong on this) if you don't wanna go into a fellowship, then I don't think it would matter where you did your residency as long as you go to a residency that makes you happy...how big of a program do you like? how much do you wanna do scut? do you care for a university setting or a community based setting?...from what i have heard and read, it seems as if the community ones are a little less hectic than the university based ones...but like i said, i could be wrong on this one....

these are all questions you may wanna ask yourself....

I know it's a difficult time....I'm in the same boat myself!!!! 🙄
