At my DO school we recently had a "hospital day" fair and there were a bunch of hospitals with DO residency representatives there. I'm definitely interested in ortho and I talked to a few of the reps in different ortho programs and each one said that they will NOT even consider inviting an applicant for an interview unless that applicant has done a rotation with them. So I was just wondering would it make sense to ortho programs that one hasn't rotated at? I guess I can't imagine doing 3 or 4 away rotations 4th year and then only apply to those 3 or 4 residency programs in the match. Any thoughts? Does anybody know if MD ortho residencies essentially consider it a MUST to do an away rotation with their program if you have hopes of matching there?

This in my humble opinion is the biggest knock on the DO match for ortho especially. It's not really a match at all anymore because you know where you are going to be. Many of my friends already know or have something down where they will be. The MD match you definitely have probably better chance to match at a place where you rotated because you are a known entity, and that's why DO programs do it the way they do, just don't call it a match though.
