How many research for credit classes should I take?

Hi,
In my college they offer 2 research for credit classes that are both 3 credits. In the second research class, I'm supposed to write a thesis. I know that it is preferable to have research experience to get into medical school. Would it be good if I just take the first research class or should I take both?

Writing a thesis would be a good experience, although it is not required of your research EC. If you want to, do it. If not, lack of thesis won't negatively impact how adcoms view your research, so don't worry.

Typically - the credit for research courses are designed so that you can get school credit for work you are doing anyway. I would only pay for the course if you need some upper division credits to count towards your major. You decide if you want to keep pursuing research or not. Having had the experience, you can pursue it if that is what you like but it is no big deal. Maybe your school is set up different but that was how my school had set it up.

1 semester vs. 2 is really not much different. Whats more important is what you gain from your experience. The point of undergraduate research is to learn the science and reasoning behind your project, think critically and independently, design experiments, and gain an appreciation for and understanding of the scientific process. Like mistafab says, typically these courses are for students who already have independent research going and would like credit hours for it.
