This is kind of like a what are my chances thread.

I am a Canadian student,

cumulative GPA: 3.23
science GPA: 3.18
bcp GPA: 3.13
nonsci GPA: 3.48

DAT: 24TS / 24AA / 25 PAT
no section under 22

Master of Science in Biology in the US -> GPA of 4.0
But it is from 2 semesters, 9 credits each, so that might be low.

ECs -> Very few, because I had to work full time during undergrad. This is also the cause of my low undergrad GPA.

Working Experience -> Tons, tutor, weekend manager at video store, worked and lived with rural farmers in China, played a large role in establishing 2 business deals in my family's company (I doubt adcom would care though).

Shadowing -> 95 Hours total.

Courseload -> I took courses required for a specialist degree in cell and molecular biology and a major in biochemistry at the same time, but I usually took only 9-12 credits each semester because I had to work. I only took 9 credits a semester in my Master's because I had to move back and forth between the city I am at and a neighboring one. Plus, I did some research. This might be a problem. I am going to take 18 credits of graduate coursework in the fall to prove myself.

So, how many schools should I apply to? I don't really want to attend any schools outside of NY, MA, or CA. My current priorities are UoP, USC, NYU, Columbia, BU, Tufts.

But, I really want to get in this year, so I am feeling that if I only pick a few schools, I might get rejected from the above choices and have to wait another year. Should I just spend the money to apply to a bunch of schools and suck up the fact that I might not get to go to any of the above 6?

My top choice is BU because of so many reasons. I would reject an acceptance at Columbia just to go there. So I also have to ask, what do you guys think my chances of being accepted at BU are? My interviewing skills are mediocre. 🙁 My personal statement should be above average. The writing center people absolutely loved it, and health professions office people all said it was pretty good.

If I were in your shoes I would probably apply to about 20 schools, then accept maybe 8-10 interview invites.

have you already submitted your application?

i'm no expert, but i would apply to as many schools as reasonably possible, meaning, all schools i would have a chance at that give a decent number of seats to international applicants. at the end of the day, you want to be a dentist and any dental school will fit the bill 🙂

I might just add a few more to the list and apply to ~12 or so.

Temple, Nova, Midwestern x2, Case?

Being Canadian definitely makes things different...

I am still wondering, what are my chances for BU? BU seems like one of those schools that really know what kind of students they are looking for. Out of about 4000 applicants a year they accept 250 for interviews, and from predents, it seems 70% are accepted from those. So they really know how to select applicants?

BU invited more people than that for interviews by the way...just letting you know. 👍

oh really?

Is there somewhere I can (besides the ADEA guide) for these information?

lol I'm actually going off of my ADEA guide to Dental schools and it says that they interview over 400 people. 😱

perhaps i am thinking of acceptances. accept ~250 and retain 115? hmm it doesnt sound right still.

So, I was looking at the excel file with the # of international students accepted by each school and have thus decided on applying on 8 this cycle:

UoP, USC, NYU, Columbia, BU, Tufts, Nova, Case.

What are my chances of getting accepted at any one of these places? :x

My application is complete a weeks ago and was mailed out yesterday. The other schools just don't seem to have many seats for internationals. Upenn and Detroit Mercy just seem to have very high GPA for matriculates, which I don't have -_-. If only it was easier for Canadians. Canadian and low GPA just screams bad combination!

Cangnome I'm not a d-student but I can tell you that you have a good chance for NYU, BU, Columbia and UoP. A frind of mine with similar GPA of yours with similar DAT (23/24/24) ended up interviewing BU, Columbia and NYU. Case and Nova might not offer interview bec. they admit candidates with pretty high GPA.

Overall, you are set buddy! lol really want to see you at BU and Columbia interview lol

Yes, I hope I can meet you there 😛

You will get interviews for sure! Getting your stats at UBC are even more impressive. 🙂

Anyways, I also added indiana last night, hope I am not too late o_o. Probably +Penn, although I doubt I will hear from them.

Haha thanks! Indiana definitely! your DAT score is much higher than their average acceptants but they do require 3.3 sGPA minimum so you might phone and check. IU staffs are VERY friendly

Upenn may be tough one, bec they have like 3.6-3.7 average gpa but with your extraordinary DAT, why not? lol

PS: with your grad gpa of 4.0, why don't you apply to U of T or UWO? both schools only count best 2 years and I think once you complete this year's course work, you should be set for those schools too.

to Dr. Tank, I don'y know why you think I'm funny. So, am I not even allow to dream about Columbia and BU interview?

I am pretty much intent on getting into a US school right now, so I don't think I will really look into Canadian dental schools. My family will be moving down to the states and everything. But of course, who knows what will happen next year.

Well, i called Indiana, and I am told that there are no exceptions to the 3.3 GPA cutoff.

Well, looking at pre-dents there are some people that are accepted with under-3.3.

Can anyone clarify? 😕

"Lovers" CANgnome and RedDevilDDS 8===>😍

Sorry for offending you above, it was just too hard not to comment on your statement: "lol really want to see you CANgnome lol." Anyways Im sure you will get an interview over at Columbia and BU with your stats. I applied to Columbia as well. Good luck.

Oh and CANgnome, you will get interviews for sure, your DAT score is awesome.

Sorry RedDevil, but I am taken

Coincidentally, I am from Vancouver too, and live inside UBC! 😱🤣😱

Just in the states doing my Master now :meanie:

Want to go back and sleep for a whole year though.

Hey CANgnome, I have somewhat similar GPAs and DAT scores as you, am Canadian as well, and I got rejected @ Case just a few days ago... first school to get a decision, so still early in the cycle but getting very nervous. I hope our GPAs/scores will get us some interview invites ><

Yeah, I am not really giving much hope to my Case application. I added Nova since someone mentioned that they really liked Master's GPA 😕

Here's to hoping! >_<

haha good to hear that! I wish I am taken too... no time for me working like 12 hours everyday 😛

Hey DrTank no worries may be I was a bit too picky on your posts. I just checked your stats with 27 TS and 24 AA... and now I understand why you thought I was funny 😳 well... I know you will get an interview from Columbia for SURE...but not me 🙁

Anyways good luck DrTank although you probably don't need it with your stats lol

Mindlelae do you mind sharing your mailed date for CASE and how long it took to show "under review" on AADSAS?

My mailing date for CASE was 8/6 and I just want to know when they will update my status

Sure. Mailing date 7/16, "Received/under review" 7/23, denied 8/6. I believe with your stats you will get an interview invite. 🙂

Wow that was quick! thanks Mindlelae! 😀

Hmm I don't know... My biggest problem is that I have 16 RC... although my first DAT has 20 RC so I hope this can save me from the cutoffs...

Most schools said they look at both attempts... except TUFTS. Tufts told me that they will not consider my second attempt because they have RC cut off of 17... they said they will only look at my first DAT score 😱

I still applied to Tufts lol I know I will be rejected but I just want to donate my $75 to that cool looking Tufts dental building 😀
