For those of you who are in Pod schools or are planning to apply this year, how many schools did you (or are planning to) apply to? I am planning to apply this coming Sept and am debating if I should apply to just a few or all 8. Preferably, my top choices are California or AZPOD since it is closer to home. Thanks all! 👍

I would recommend applying to at least 4 schools. This way if you don't get your first or second choice, you will have other options available to you. I did it this way and it worked out well.

It depends on the schools you are interested in. AZPOD will be more competitive, but CSPM will not. I would suggest adding Temple, CPMS, and Scholl; that will cover the upper schools in the podiatry game.

Hi, I went to my interview at California School of Pod. of Med. I have an interview at Temple in the next few weeks. If I get accepted into both, which do I pick? 😕

Temple for sure. You'll see the difference when you get there. Have you interviewed anywhere else? Are those the only classes that are not filled?

From what I've heard, I agree, pick Temple! When did you submit your app by the way?

Thanks for the advice. Why Temple? I am not too sure when I submitted my application but it was April-May. I know I submitted my applications late, but finally got a chance to finish my application.

Dr. Feelgood, I also have interviews in NY and FL. However, I am not too sure if I want to attend those schools. Should I go? If so, why? It seems to me Miami wouldn't be a good school to attend. I like the fact that some schools are connected to a medical school.

Thanks again for all your help.

What have you heard? Why not CSPM?

I can tell you that I wasted $1000 on flights and motel to see Barry in FL and I was extremely disappointed. As soon as I arrived on campus, I had to push myself to go through the interview process. Of course, I was already accepted to Scholl, so there was some bias. But, the location, environment, and staff really turned me off from the school. The lady who showed me around for a tour, just walked me around and didn't explain anything. She seemed very unhappy about her surroundings. The classrooms and labs were very old. The admissions did not explain any classes to me, they just gave me a booklet of classes to read on my own time. The classes did not seem structured like a medical school curriculm, rather it looked like a bunch of electives you would take as graduate level courses. Also I was told that there are still many students at school in the late evening. I think this is one of those schools that may waste a lot of a students study time. Also, they gave me an option to take a five year course if I failed some of there classes. This should not be an option that is presented to perspective students before they attend any classes.

Of course they offered me $5000 per year scholarships if I kept a 3.0GPA, but the financial aid lady told me that I would be strugling to finance my living expenses while in school. But they offered that I could live in a run down motel room for like $150 a week. The average ghetto apartment around there for students is over $1000 per month. If you want something that is out of the hood, you would go have a 20 mile commute to an elite area south of Miami, so you can rent something decent starting at $1100 per month for a 1bdrm 😱 .

Anyway, I would not recommend going to Barry unless you have some ties to south FL or family around there. Go into a program that is associated with a real medical school. I know that I am being mean to some of you SDN'ers in the Barry program, however I am just stating why I believe Barry is not a good school. Please feel free to argue against my claims, I don't know everything.

However, I like to get peoples opinions, especially if they are presently going there or know people who have gone to both schools.

Yeah after researching that is the same conclusion that I came to with Barry. That kind of structure would be great for some people but not for me. I had an interview at Scholl, but unfortunately, before I could go to the interview they called me letting me know that all their seats have been filled. Besides Scholl and Miami, did you go to any other interviews?

No.. my first interview last November was at Scholl. Then I went to Barry a week later because I had bought the plane tickets and had a timeshare condo set up. So the girlfriend and I went down to look at the Miami area.

I have been to DMU a year ago for an Osteopathic interview, so I kinda seen what their school is like. DMU's facilities are brand new, so they have a nice set up. Also, the curriculm with the regular medical school is a plus. Although I grew up on a farm, and went to high school in a really rural area population of 1200 people and a graduating class of 20 something. I didn't push to go to Des Moines. Also, I was aready applied to their DO program and was unsure about my path at the time. I thought about dropping my application and applying straight to their DPM program. But after viewing Scholl I was stuck on living in Chicago. Tell you one thing, Des Moines living is pretty cheap and comfortable. The curriculm rocks there. But I felt that I may want more research opportunities at Scholl.
If you could pick a school choose: Scholl, DMU, AZPOD, and Temple.

I would have to also suggest applying to at least 4 schools. Depending ofcourse on your GPA and MCAT scores, you can count on receiving interviews to at least two of the four. The general rule of thumb is that you will receive interviews to half of the schools you apply to if you have competitive scores. This is true for just about any and all grad programs. Ofcourse, if you have a 3.9 GPA and a 30 on the MCAT, you will probably get interviews everywhere you apply.

Be mindful of the fact that interviewing is an expensive endeavor. I interviewed at Temple, DMU, OCPM, and Scholl. All said, I spent close to $1500 on interview trips. However, don't just apply to a school based on geography. Just because you live on the west coast, don't just apply to CSPM or AZPOD. Apply to schools in other parts of the country as well. I would definitely suggest DMU and Scholl.

Sorry Clovers, to clarify, I just meant that I've been hearing so much praise about Temple's program on these forums and their connection to the med school's program, which would makes sense due to the amount of extra resources a med school could bring. It seems like most do consider Temples program to be in the upper tier compared to CSPM. However, location-wise I would prefer CSPM since I am from California too, but we shouldn't let this factor limit ourselves from all of the possibilities that other pod schools have to offer. Guess we won't fully find out which school's program is for us until we see all of the schools for ourselves at the interview (hopefully). :meanie: By the way where are u from Clovers?

Hi Cheetos, I'm from Sacramento. I went to UC Davis for undergrad. I'm still kinda bum out the fact that CSPM is at the low tier. I thought all professional schools in CA are top-notch....all the med schools, optometry schools, dental schools in CA are top-notch so I figured same goes for pod school in CA..I guess I was wrong. I was only going to apply to CSPM but I guess I need to have other options available just in case I don't like CSPM campus.

So...is there anything good about CSPM?

Hey! Small world after all! I'm also from Sacramento and am a 4th yr at UC Davis rite now. Did u already graduate? Yea, I was bummed out too when I first heard that CSPM was not one of the best schools, which was surprising since we're so good in the other health professions. I don't know why any of the UCs don't open up a Pod school. Well to keep your hopes up with CSPM, I just talked to Jeff Tseng, he's one of the Student Pod Mentors who works with the AACPM ppl. He's a 3rd yr at CSPM. Here is what he emailed me when I asked him about CSPM's program:

CSPM has a great program with many outstanding faculty members. CSPM has always been one of the leaders of podiatric education and CSPM has strived to maintain it's integrity. I personally enjoy the experience here at CSPM and continue to work arduously to improve upon our current programs

You should contact him if you want more info about the school. Here's his email: [email protected] Don't give up all hopes yet! Maybe we'll both like it after we see everything for ourselves

Hey! It is a small world afterall. I graduated in 2005 and decided to take some time off from school because I didn't really know what I want to do. Did you already shadow a podiatrist? I emailed several podiatrist in Sacramento but none reply yet 🙁 Why did you decide to pick podiatry anyway? There aren't too many pre-pod students at UCD. The pre-health advisors don't really advertise the profession either 🙄

None of those programs that you mentioned are connected with medical schools they are affliated by name and some staff alone. Personally, if you are interested in the school than I would go. If you have a little interest then don't waste your money. You're major disadvantage is that you are applying so late and therefore have a very limit choice in schools. Temple is the only one of those 4 that I would personally consider. No offense to the students their but they are not know for being top programs.

This is similar to the cost of renting in Chicago, NY and California.

How fast do the seats fill up? Around what month?

DMU began wait listing students months ago and I understand Scholl just recently filled all their seats as well. To stand your best chance of being admitted to a quality program such as these two I would suggest applying early in the cycle and interviewing in the fall or early winter. There are schools that are still accepting students right up to the beginning of class, but I would be a little suspicious of any program that hasn't filled by then. Just my opinion though. 😉

Sort of...

Scholl is located in a suburban area, so rent is not as high as it would be in the city. Downtown chicago rent is 1.5x more than renting in the suburbs. However, the schools in NY, Cali, and FL are in the heart of the city where prices are outragous for what you get.

I another thread a poster stated that the average price around Scholl was $1000-$1500/mnth. and he is settling for a ghetto 1 bdrm for $800/mnth. I was only restating was has been previously discussed.

Yeah, I shadowed a podiatrist last summer at Mercy San Juan Med Clinic in Citrius Heights. Unfortunately, before I could even ask him for a letter of rec, he packed his bags and moved to New York with his family. I completely lost contact with him after that. 😡 I am in the current process of finding another Podiatrist to shadow to try to get a letter of rec. I haven't been able to spend too much time searching tho since I am studying for the DATs, planning to take it in a few weeks. Once the DATs are over, I'm gonna try to contact Mercy San Juan again to see if I could shadow the other Pods. If not, I heard some of Kaisers will allow to shadow so you should try there too if you haven't already. Going thru the phone book would be the last option.

As for my interests in Pod, I first came to UC Davis hell bent on becoming a bio-mechanical engineer. Then after doing a few internships, I saw how hard it was to get a job in bio engineering and kept seeing ppl get laid off. Also, I knew I would not be able to sit in a cubicle for the rest of my life. I didn't know that there was such a thing as Podiatry until my roommate told me about it. I looked into the program and became interested in it since the foot and leg has a lot of the bio mechanics principles that relate to engineering and at the same time allows interaction with people. I was also looking at Orothopedic programs thru Allopathic med schools. I went to shadow the Pod and after that I knew it was for me. Other than that, I dont know any other Pre-Pods at Davis. By the way, are you taking the MCATs or DATs or GRE?

Yeah, you are right.

I am planning on living 15-20 minutes south from Scholl, so the rent is somewhat cheaper, but closer to the city. 😕

The surroundings around Scholl is very weird. If you go north, you encounter military housing and ghettos. If you go south, you have one of the richest areas in the Midwest. (Lots of mansions and $100+K cars)
So if you want to live in a decent place, you either go further northwest to Gurnee or southwest to Libertyville or Wheeling. I believe its worth the drive. Also, there is absolutely nothing to do unless you drive.

I applied to 4 schools. I got my interview at Scholl first and accepted and canceled all other. I loved Scholl and I was checking out the school since my second year of college. It also depends on how much money you would want to spend.

I'm taking the DAT's begining of September. I'm currently taking my last series of anatomy and physiology so I can't study much for the DATs. BTW, do you know if pod schools look mainly at your science score or all of your scores including science when it comes to the DAT? The reason I ask is there is a perceptual ability test section exclusive for dental so I'm not sure if I need to study that part.

I spoke to one of the admissions staff at Barry regarding this and he said that they don't look at the PAT section or even math section and that some schools don't look at them both either. Also he said if you get 17+ on all the sections then you should be good for most of the schools. I'd just recommend still studying for these sections at least briefly just in case this yr's cycle becomes more competitive and they may start looking at everything (thats a big IF). Better to be safe than sorry. But if you're crunch for time, then yea focus more on the science and RC section.

BTW, does anyone know which schools don't accept the DATs for sure?? It seems like all of the schools state somewhere in their websites that they accept the DATs. Some schools do say they'll accept DATs on a case by case issue but seems like they'll still accept it.

(It is not official yet, but I heard it from a very good source )As of January 2007, CPMS will no longer accept anything but the MCAT. So you can count them out.

I plan on applying to Scholl, DMU, temple, ohio, but i've been going back and forth on AZPOD. I'm from IL, so the other schools are mostly driving distance. I care about distance a little, but i care how well the schools do on boards and the school overall (housing, newer, good professors). So is it worth flying out to AZPOD for an interview to take a look at the school. i couldnt even find pictures of the school to give me an idea. So if you interviewed there or go there, please let me know if it is worth time/money. Thanks!

Hi, I'm a third year at AZPOD and wanted to encourage you to fly out for an interview and to look at the campus and surroundings. The best picture I could find of our campus was at mwunet.midwestern.edu, we do have a very beautiful, new and clean campus. We are also in the process of building a clinic across the street, should be done early next month🙂 I must tell you that as a member of the first class I took a huge risk comming out here, but it was the interview process that did it for me, so I highly recommend making the effort to come out here. We are a casual campus with strong academics, high technology and cheap rent🙂 I live in a four bedroom, two bath house with two other girls we each pay around $350, the only other school I was considering two years ago was California, and wow what a difference in rent!!!!! If you have more specific questions about my experience here I'd be glad to answer them 😳 You mentioned the things you "cared" about besides location and I am confident (although I know its early since we are new) that AZPOD has what many podiatry students are looking for...come see for yourself, in the end if you get accepted to multiple schools you'll know where to go based on how the interview made you feel. Why did I come here and risk all the debt and time on a BRAND NEW PROGRAM????? It just felt right, that's all🙂 If you need finanacial assistance with the trip ask admissions to hook you up with a student to stay with, if they won't help you post it here I'll help you.

My advice to you is... pick the top 3-4 schools you are really interested in and only apply to those. The whole application process is very expensive. Speaking to you from personal experience, I made the mistake of applying to all 8 schools. Within 3 days (not exaggerating!), I was receiving calls for interviews from more than half of the schools I applied to. By the way, be prepared to attend your interviews within a few weeks after submitting your application (not to say that all schools act this quickly - it also depends on when in the year you apply). The costs of attending the interviews adds up pretty quickly even if some of the schools do offer you lodging compensation. I ended up interviewing at my top 3 schools which were Temple, Scholl, and DMU. I choose Scholl and am completely satisfied with my choice.

The classes are small so you'll get to know your classmates and professors well. 😀

Why did I come here and risk all the debt and time on a BRAND NEW PROGRAM????? It just felt right, that's all🙂 If you need finanacial assistance with the trip ask admissions to hook you up with a student to stay with, if they won't help you post it here I'll help you.

You did convince me. I ended up applying to AZPOD. 🙂

(It is not official yet, but I heard it from a very good source )As of January 2007, CPMS will no longer accept anything but the MCAT. So you can count them out.

So if i apply before January 2007 they will accept the DATs?
