I was wondering for those of you who had a dentist write a LOR for your application, how many hours did you shadow that particular dentist. Also, did you ask the dentist about getting a LOR early on or ask after you had already shadowed for a while. I am shadowing a dentist every other week for about four hours or so and have shadowed him for about 8 hours. I thought about letting him know that some schools require a letter and asking him how he felt about writing a letter for me so I could see what he thought about how many hours he felt like I should shadow him so I wouldn't overwhelm him. Does this seem like a good approach, or how did anyone else do it. thanx

I did only about 50 hours of shadowing a dentist before he wrote me a letter, and he was happy to do it. In fact, he mentioned possibly writing me one my first day of shadowing. I would think most dentists who got to the point of having a student shadow them would be happy to write a letter for that student.

anywhere near 30 hours is enough.

i did ~ 100 hours before i asked

but i think 50 is a good amount
