How many unmatched this year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks.

So it looks like 5.5% of MD applicants failed to match, and a whopping 44% of independent applicants (DO/FMG/IMG) failed to match. Is that correct? Wow. I expect it to get worse and worse every year unless the restriction on GME funding is eased.

AMG match rate stayed about the same. Look at previous years, and about 1000 or so AMGs fail to match every year. FMGs gained 7% points, according to others bc of all all match in rule.

What percentage of people who matched to FM/IM/Peds/TRI actually wanted to match to those spots versus the percentage that settled for those spots after not matching to their preferred specialty? My concern is that I will come out of school 300K deep and not match into a reasonably well paying specialty and never be able to pay off my loan. Don't get me wrong, I am making this 300K investment because I will have the most pride in whatever type of doctor i become. but i would at least like to pay off my loan and be able to have steak with the beans and rice.

There are a lot of loan forgiveness programs for doctors. Know any poor doctors? Me either. You'll be fine no matter what you match into.

Shibby, I think your best best if you get stuck with one of the PC fields is semi-rural or Texas, Louisiana hospitalist for a few years. Some of those gigs will pay 300K right out of the gate.

Can't speak to percentage but in the 2013 match, only 59 FM programs didn't fill. Compare to about 130 FM programs on average that didn't fill in 2009-2012. Number of unfilled programs overall in these primary care specialties was much less. I has training in a non primary care specialty and tried to match into FM, so I had been watching the history pretty closely. I was a bit surprised not to match, but I was shocked to see the huge change in unfilled programs for FM.

So is it safe to say that AMG MD grads won't even be able to get FM in the coming years? What about DO grads?

I think the increased "filling" has to do with the prematch being taken away. Anyways, AMG filling has been pretty consistent at about 95% for the past several years, with probably another 3-5% filling post-SOAP so the vast majority of AMGs do match. Can't speak for the % of DOs that match but it seems that between the MD and DO matches, most do match.
