How much does attending interviews affect your school year?

Hey all,

Although I am incredibly excited and grateful to have been offered interviews for this application cycle, I am somewhat worried about what the effect will be on my school year. I am concerned about what the effects of jetting off around the continent will have on both my thesis and my final undergrad year. I realize if I do get in this year anywhere, then they likely will not look at this year (other than to maintain a certain GPA). But I am concerned more with if I don't get in anywhere - having a lower GPA would have an impact on grad school for example.

Anyways, I really just needed to vent. But I would also be very interested in hearing people's experiences with this from past application cycles and whether or not this is something to be concerned about.

It'll be tough. I'm discussing, and have discussed, will all of my professors. I have a few cake classes. But I'll be missing 3-4 4hr P.Chem labs, 10 spanish lectures, etc. It'll add up.

I'll have to rock the first few tests and hope on the last few since my interviews take up, so far, the end of October!

Just plan ahead.

Well, unfortunately I will not know who any of my professors are until September. Even then though, I can't see them being too concerned with my situation as I attend a very large school.

Obviously planning ahead is key, but still - all of my courses next year have one midterm and one final. Considering the interviews are all around the midterm period, I do feel that that would have an impact on my year despite my best attempts to plan ahead.

If anyone who has gone through this before in previous cycles, I would really appreciate knowing how attending interviews affected your school year (either negatively or no effect whatsoever).

One good thing is that everyone is in the same boat... 🙄

It affected me negatively because none of my professors were too kind about it. Got C in one class because I wasnt able to make up 2 quizzes which were 10% of the your final avg. B in 4000 lvl Bio class instead of A because prof. decides to give me a graduate test as a make-up exam. B in another class because you lose all your attendance points of you miss more than 3 classes. 😎

It probably isn't possible for all, but I purposely took a lighter load during that fall quarter expecting that I would have to leave occasionally for interviews. Also let my boss at work know at the end of the summer as well about the possiblities of missing some time during the fall.

I found myself with a little too much free time, but it payed of when one school sent an email telling me to be there next week.

I haven't gotten any interview invites yet so I don't really know what to expect. When a school invites you do they just give a specific day, or a list of days you can choose from? Also are interviews primarily held during the week or on weekends? Thanks.

Interviews are held during the week for the most part. Out of the invites I have received, one was an assigned date, one gave me a few dates to pick from, and the other basically let me schedule whenever I wanted.

I second that. The assigned dates are tough, especially if given on relatively short notice, or if you have midterms/test on or near that date.
