How should I cancel my secondary application?

Hi,

I want to pull my application from a couple of schools that I have not yet sent my secondary to. I might apply to these schools in the future. Should I email the schools and tell them that I want my application to be pulled, or should I just wait for the deadline to pass? Basically, I do not want to make them mad so that I have a chance if I plan to apply there in the future. Please let me know what you think, and thank you.

Schools receive thousands and thousands of applications each year, they're not going to be "mad" at you for not completing the secondary. You will be labeled a reapplicant at their school regardless of if you send an email to withdraw or just let the deadline pass. I'd just let the deadline pass, personally.

It's really easy, just don't turn in the secondary. They could care less if you send in an email or not, the end result is the same.

Not quite: If the OP will possibly be a reapplicant, there is some value in sending a letter and/or finding the school specific process to withdraw an uncompleted application. If the student then reapplies (and as pointed earlier in the thread he/she will be a reapplicant based on AMCAS), there is a slight advantage in having withdrawn rather then seen as someone who did not even bother to finish secondary in previous cycle.

At the same time though, schools will gladly send secondaries to students that they will autoreject anyhow. It's just a crappy way of making lots of money from students. It should be a two-way street, where neither side takes anything personally.

I doubt that it will matter that seriously but hey, I'm not an adcom member.

Even so, every adcom is different and many may not weigh an official withdrawal email pre-secondary as heavily as others do.

I think it should go without saying that if the school's application portal or something has a button to click to "withdraw," then you should go that route. But I guess it needs to be said...
