While prewriting my secondaries, I have really started to hone in on the "why us" essays. What I want to know is how specific they would like us to be in these. When I say how specific, I don't mean going in depth on their websites and looking at their unique resources (I know this should always be a starter), but instead how specific we should be in our own ideas. For instance, if I have a very, very detailed goal/project that I want to work towards (akin to a "mock proposal" or grant), do I discuss that? Sorry if this sounds stupid, I really just have no idea...

I agree you don't need to do a pitch. It's not Shark Tank.

Show them that you've done your homework about them.

As @Goro said show you've done your homework. At the same time, don't be so specific that you sound rigid or entitled. Express interest in specific aspects of the program that you can also relate to your past experience.
