How to answer the question, "what do you see yourself doing in X years?"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just answer it the best you can. I doubt that any of us like that question, yet it's one that we all will have to answer [probably] at least once on the interview circuit. (I've had to answer that question for 10, 12, and 20 years so far in my interviews this year.)

Do you have a vision of yourself practicing medicine?

Your hometown? Is it a Big city? little city? small town? Rural area?

Office based practice? Does a hospital setting seem more to your liking (ER, ICU?, rehab)?

Like long term relationships with patients (treating chronic conditions such as diabeters as well as primary care-prevention) or intense short-term contacts (as one has with a specialty surgeon)?

Would you like to practice medicine in a clincal setting with no other resopnsiblities (you want to practice as a clinician) or whould you prefer to combine patient care with teaching residents and research (if so, say that you want to go into academic medicine)?

Shadowing and/or other experiences in medicine should have given you some pictures in your head. Where do you see yourself in those pictures?
