Hey everyone,

Can someone explain step by step how this can be done most easily? Specifically in regards to obtaining and sending letters. I'm aware of using Interfolio, but my question goes deeper than this: do letter writers need specific "code numbers" obtained from AMCAS for each letter before they can upload their letters? I'm really confused and I want to make sure I'm having letter writers submit the correct way.

Thanks.

is it because your school doesn't have one or because you don't want to use it. If it's the latter: bad idea.

WingedOx: Thanks for the response. My school does have one, but i graduated in 2012 and they have a rule that they only write committee letters for students who graduated within 2 years of application cycle. So they said they can't do a committee letter. Stinks!

Scarlet: I am planning on using Interfolio.

Any help would be appreciated!

Just have them upload the letters to interfolio. Make sure it's dated, signed, and official letterhead. you can attach any amcas/aacomas id yourself before you send them out.

Summit: Thanks for the response. Can you elaborate on the ID numbers? I'm not sure how that stuff works because the last time I applied my school did everything; now that I'm graduated for a few years they won't do anything.

AMCAS will give you a different ID number for every LOR. When you request Interfolio to submit the letters to AMCAS, you will be asked on the Interfolio site to provide the ID numbers for every LOR.

Scarlet: Thanks. So I'll have a different ID number for each letter, even if I'm sending them as a letter packet? I read on the AMCAS website that the letter packet should be entered into AMCAS as one entry?

I never tried as a packet, so I'm not too sure as to how that would work. When did this last year, I just sent all mine to AMCAS as individual letters through Interfolio.

If you're not using the committee letter, there is no 'packet'. You (your letter writers) are sending individual letters to interfolio, and then you choose to send those individual letters to amcas (each with their own ID that you can attach via interfolio).

Agree with the above with trying to submit a single letter packet as that will make things easier logistically. If you can'd do that, though, then when you sign up for AMCAS you will have the ability to add letters individually. When you add a letter, AMCAS will generate a form that you give to your letter writer to include with the letter. The letter writer then mails the letter directly to AMCAS. Once it's been processed, it will appear in your AMCAS and you'll be able to assign the letter to schools from there.
