hey guys,

for those of us going into rads and are going to do be doing aways. i thought that we could get a thread started on things to do/things not to do while rotating at an institution where you'd like to go for rads residency. What are some things that you did that made you stand out? what books did you read? did you participate in reserach? did that help you match?

Show up twice, maybe three times a week (if you're a gunner).

This is actually a really good question. I personally think it's very difficult to set yourself apart as a student on a radiology rotation. Unlike many other rotations, you don't really have much to offer as a student, even if you're interested in radiology. So how do you show interest?

I'm not sure I have a great answer to that question, but I do know that you shouldn't bother me while I'm trying to get work done. Nothing will **** me off more than a student who constantly asks questions while I'm trying to dictate or while I'm trying to read out with my staff. You're much better off keeping your mouth shut than trying to overdo it. It's okay to ask questions if it's not busy, of course.

Actually show up. We do notice these things. We recognize that it's boring for you, especially if you're not being taught anything, but if you at least show up for a little while that will help. We're not going to be particularly upset if you leave early. After all, you can't help do the work anyway, but if you've rotated and we can't even recognize your face come rank list time, then that's bad.

use common sense. got it.

as a side question to this thread, what is a good BEGINNER text on how to approach to read and interpret radiographs/CT etc... even though its getting towards the end of 3rd year, i'm pretty weak in my radiological skills even though i'm not planning on pursuing rads
